Weekly Challenge #59: Modern architecture
Posted By: gawan, 05-26-2008, 03:21 PM

Welcome to the Weekly Challenge #59: Modern architecture

I am searching a picture that tries to show the spirit of modern architecture. I think this is not just a postcard picture of a famous building - I am searching for an unusual and somehow interesting view or angle to any modern architectural building or construction you think qualifies (along with buildings also bridges and industrial constructions will do).

EDIT: see also my in-between-note: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/257168-post30.html

Please submit entries till midnight GMT on Monday, June 2, 2008.

HAVE FUN!

The rules are as always:

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.

The Electra

A reflection of the Electra in the glass of One Wall Center.

The Eletra was built in the 1950's in the true modern style. It has been designated a heritage site, and was converted from office space to residential condo's.

One Wall Center was finished in 2001 and is Vancouver's tallest building, (well it was in 2001, it might not be now).

I chose this photo because it contrasts Vancouver's past with Vancouver's future. The Electra was built during the post war building boom. To me it is a modern building, built at the time Vancouver was becoming a modern city. One Wall Center, is Vancouver's future. It might be considered Vancouver's fist super tower.

Here are a couple of links if anyone wants to know more:

Hi Georg,
I wont post more photos here as its only for the comp. i think, you can look at the house here if the link works, thanks for the interest, the Architect who designed this house is very much into natural materials and we love building houses for him and his clients.
SmugMug Photo Sharing. Your photos look better here.
Hey Jaws, thank you for the link, awesome photos there. I have had hard time resisting the urge to write comments in advance...

I have some great shots of Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water and Kentuck Knob but can't post due to "Personal use only" rules of photography at those properties. I highly recommend seeing both to anyone interested in this subject.
Now, on to my photo. Not much modern architecture here in York, PA. Here is one of the few examples of something that is NOT colonial.

Dave,
your Las Vegas shot is as razor as it gets (just on the edge of oversharp on my monitor, but just fine for my taste).
A question to you concerning your pictures of the Legislative Building in the POTW thread. Both of these look quite fuzzy towards the left edge - very much different to this awesome Las Vegas pic. Would be nice to know which lens for which and the basic postprocess if you can remember. Answer could go into the POTW thread also, if it'd be off-topic here.

Keep it going, Georg
Hi Goeorge - the Vegas pic was taken with the Tanrom 18-250 I believe. The leg shots are my bad - I left it on spot metering and AFc from a previous shoot, alos the Leg was shot a f2.8 no reason for that. The Vegas picture had some color adjustment and sharping while the Leg was jpg righ out of the camera (lazy). Oh Yeah the Leg was taken with the DA* 16-50. I have been happy with that lens , pretty sure I got a good one (tested 3 in the shop before I bought one) - I think it is was just me being stupid not checking settings (I do that way too often!)
