Weekly Challenge 312 "History"
Posted By: StephenHampshire, 01-23-2015, 02:50 PM

It falls upon me to set the next weekly challenge. Here in the UK we are currently celebrating 800 years since the signing of Magna Carta, and also 50 years since the death of Winston Churchill.....so I thought that I would choose "History" as this weeks challenge....

Some ideas could be historical buildings, old objects, books, even fake historical figures....here are a few from me to set the scene

The fine print:

The Challenge will run until midnight next Friday January 30th 2015, whichever time zone you are in.

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Some petroglyphs just outside of town here.
They are estimated to be about 2000 years old, from before the Ute tribe lived around here.
Anthropologists think it was a marker indicating good hunting grounds. To this day it still is!

Here is a photo I took a few weeks ago at a local Old Soldiers Cemetery near where I live. This particular photo is of a soldier who received the Medal Of Honor in the American Civil War. This cemetery contains the graves of our hero's from the Civil War to WW1.

Head On

An old steamer from the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia. The 509 sits in front of the Cookeville Depot Museum in Putnam County, TN. I've taken several photos of this old engine, but I like this most recent shot.

This one for me was a bit of a personal challenge. I'm proficient at using Lightroom, but Photoshop, not even close. I took this photo of this old post office, and I wanted to challenge myself to edit the photo to "see" what it would have looked like back in the day. I had many mailboxes, a phone booth and a lot of other modern elements I had to remove to get it to what you see here. All things considered, I was pleased with the final result. I hope you enjoy it as well.

A piece of flight history. This is one of the first airliners operated by Air Canada. A Lockheed Electra, she was built in 1937 and was restored to her original condition in the 1980's. Recently, she flew to Toronto to participate in the 75th anniversary of Air Canada along with the newest addition to the fleet, the Boeing 787. Here, she is on display at the Western Manitoba Aviation Museum in Winnipeg, MB. Captured in the setting sun of a very cold winters day, very happy to be inside and not out!

Churchill's bunker

Oh yes, let's go history berserk! Below is the front piece, featuring the viewing gap, of the Fort Henry in Studland, Dorset. Winnie Churchill, along with Eisenhower, Mighty-Monty and the King, were supervising the D-Day preparations and other WWII activities from here. Built on the edge of Studland cliffs by Canadians in 1943.

This image, of Humboldt Bay on the California north coast, includes old pylons that at one time supported railroad tracks that at one time were part of a flourishing seaport. Now, very little is left of those busy days beyond a few collections of ruins, still sticking up out of the water, such as these pylons:

This letter "B" is from the old "Barbary Coast" neon sign that was atop the "Barbary Coast Hotel & Casino" in Las Vegas from 1979 to 2007. At that time the property was purchased by Harrah's Entertainment and was renamed "Bill's Gamblin' Hall & Saloon". Last year it was renovated and reopened as "The Cormwell" boutique hotel and casino. This letter "B" now exists in the YESCO neon boneyard, where all the old signage is laid to rest. I normally wouldn't give such a lengthy background to one of my contest photos but given the theme, I thought it would be fitting.

The Perspective of History

Great challenge. Many fine photos here. Rather than focusing on artifacts of history, my image is meant here to symbolize the vast, eternal expanse of history.

History is a cyclic poem written by time upon the memories of man.
- Percy Bysshe Shelley

This is the YESCO boneyard, not the Neon museum?

WWI

Statue head in BW

It is the head of Gavrilo Princip, who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, in Sarajevo 28 June 1914. Afterwards Austrian-Hungarian Empire invaded Serbia, which was led to the begin of WWI.
