Weekly challenge #318 - Photos Inspired by Song Lyrics
Posted By: tessfully, 03-13-2015, 06:47 AM

Thank you Charlie for last weeks challenge and congrats to Rob who actually won that challenge but could not host this week.

Music often inspires our art. For this theme dig through your archives or create an image that’s inspired by a song or specific lyric you love.

Please include the title, artist, and lyric(s). If possible, a video of the song performed or a description of "why" would be awesome as well.

Challenge will close Wednesday March 19, at midnight.

Most of all, please have fun!!!

The Animals --- House of the Rising Sun:

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

Bob Seger --- Like a Rock --- Image inspired by the feel of the song:

And I stood arrow straight
Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these hustlers and their schemes
I stood proud, I stood tall
High above it all
I still believed in my dreams

Twenty years now
Where'd they go?
Twenty years
I don't know

Bob Seger - Like A Rock - Video Dailymotion

Eddie Veder --- Big Hard Sun --- an abstraction of a "literal" inspiration.

When I walk beside her
I am the better (wo)man
when i look to leave her
I always stagger back again

Once I built an ivory tower
so I could worship from above
when I climb down to be set free
she took me in again

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Everyone is eligible to send in their best interpretation of the given theme, as long as the photo is taken with a Pentax/Samsung camera. Themes can be subject-oriented or technique-oriented.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Up, Up and Away

By the 5th Dimension

Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon?
Would you like to glide in my beautiful balloon?
We could flow among the stars, together you and I

For we can fly, up, up and away
(For we can fly)
In my beautiful, my beautiful balloon

Oh I am sure you do somewhere in your archive! I just picked a few songs I absolutely love and then had fun looking through my albums till I found just the right photo. I think I'd like to do this the other way around... have a song already in mind and then create the image to fit my interpretation. But, both work here.

Goodness, Tess, you chose a terrific theme. It sent me down my stack of favorite songs while browsing my photos. (Love House of the Rising Sun -- used to play lead guitar on that one.) In the end, though it's March and with summer approaching (we hope, sometime!) I can't help but choose Dusty Springfield's song...

Summer is Over

The birds fly away to the sun
The leaves touch the ground one by one
The breeze hurries by without even goodbye
And it looks like the summer is over.

And for those who don't know the song or performer:

Learning to fly

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss

Can't keep my mind from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

I decided to interpret the theme a little bit differently, instead of a picture inspired by a song i went for a picture to a song, in the form of a vinyl record.

The song right under the stylus tip is called "Heart of the sunrise" by Yes...and that orange spinning Atlantic records label also somewhat points towards the idea of a sunrise

Of course there's a little trick involved as the cantilever is just barely hovering over the surface and not touching it, if it was actually playing the imperfections of the record would blur the image with the exposure time required to get the shiny surface effect

I Don't Want to set the World on Fire

This photo was partly inspired by the lyrics:
"I don't want to set the world on fire,
I just want to start
a flame in your heart" by the Ink Spots.
