Weekly Challenge #319 "Weather or not"
Posted By: charliezap, 07-01-2015, 01:48 PM

I'm again thrilled and honored to be hosting the Weekly Challenge.I looked through my photo library to see what would jump out at me for a theme and many weather associated shots were there.

Weather can be dramatic, benign, calm, beautiful and as such many more adjectives can be applied. My theme is broadbased and that's why I included several examples as to what I'm looking for. I would assume that everyone has a shot that will fit the theme in one way or another. That being said "let the games begin"
The challenge will close on Thursday midnight my time on July 9th.-----charliezap

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Everyone is eligible to send in their best interpretation of the given theme, as long as the photo is taken with a Pentax/Samsung camera. Themes can be subject-oriented or technique-oriented.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

We don't have a whole lot of dramatic weather here in California. But here's a photo with two types of weather in it:

You'll see a typical, clear night sky, which we have a lot of, all the time, to the point that they're boring. But, more interestingly, you can see here hints of space weather. There is a faint, green glow in the sky where solar-charge particles are interacting with our ionosphere. It's not an aurora, but just a gentle, continuous, and ever-present glow in the atmosphere.

Just before the Downpour in Maui

A few minutes after I took this, I was drenched. Glad my K5 was water resistant but had to make sure my DA 12-24mm f/4 wasn't water damaged.

Fog in the Chisos Basin

My family had been driving across Texas to the Chisos Basin at Big Bend National Park. All day we'd been trying to keep ahead of a weather system which was covering Texas with low-level clouds, fog, and freezing temperatures. By the time we reached Fort Stockton, the last place we could get cell reception before the park, the weather system was starting to catch up with us, and temperatures were starting to drop below freezing. We were worried-- we would have to drive up through a steep mountain pass to make it into the basin, and we were afraid it would be impossible because of ice. So we called the Chisos Basin to ask what conditions were like there, and they said...70's and sunny. HOLY COW. So we booked it over to the Basin. By the time we made it, the surrounding desert was blanketed by clouds and fog, but the mountains ringing the basin had been keeping the weather system out-- clouds were just beginning to spill into the basin as we arrived.

This first photo is my entry:

Not my entry for the contest, but I just wanted to add that in the morning, we ventured out into the desert, and the freezing fog overnight had transformed the desert into a wonderland. I've been visiting Big Bend National Park for 20 years and I'd never seen it like this.

The needles of ice from the frozen fog on the yucca leaves were spectacular.

Hi Outis,

All it took was a minute of viewing your photos and icicles starting forming on my computer screen. Your photos captured the temperature accurately. Beautifully done!

Cheers,

That second image would be my entry if it were my shot. Nothing says weather like that shot.

Here is my entry. A fly by at Wright-Patterson AFB during one of their Tatoos (open houses). Once the rain clouds started to roll in, you could actually see the prop wash behind the plane and remnants of prop wash from the previous plan in front of it.

From a series of cloud shots. This one has the shadow of the front clouds on the rear ones, even though the sun was essentially behind all of them...

I guess for me weather is more about clouds, to compliment the sunset. The ones after a storm are the best.

Rain at Sea

Taken earlier this year in Madeira in the late afternoon, this is a panorama combining two shots.

This picture is already old, but i "found it back" some time ago. So it pays going over the thousands of photos sometimes.
This photo was taken on a very cold winterday in Rangsdorf, close to Berlin Germany, just before the sun came up. It was kind of weird as you could not see the horizon at all. It is in the picture though because i know the location.

So this photo refers to the "or not" part of the challange as you can not see the weather.

Misty Hills

This is a picture from a recent trip. I hoped to take a lot of photos, but the weather was really bad. I was in kind of a bad mood, but this picture helped to lift my spirits
