#341: Common Subject or Object Uncommonly Presented
Posted By: Tamia, 02-07-2016, 11:27 AM

Welcome to this edition of the Weekly Challenge, #341. Thanks to Superduper, who hosted last week's Challenge, the honor of carrying the baton has been passed to me.

This week's theme is Common Subject or Object Uncommonly Presented. In other words, show me a photo with a common subject or object presented in a different way than you'd normally expect to see it. If the photo carries an implied "message" or is humorous, all the better. Please feel free to elaborate with an explanation if one seems necessary.

I'll give a few examples from my archive to give you ideas of what I mean...

Halloween Pumpkin Lobotomized by squirrels and shrunken by sub-freezing nights

Bird A redwing blackbird takes flight (Described further here.)

Hook, Line, and Sinker Deadly to wildlife, monofilament, hook, and lead sinkers are tangled in overhead wire during a snowstorm

Flip-Flop Floating upside down in a river eddy

ShoppingCart Rusting and toppled near an overgrown auto graveyard

Foliage Abstract of ferns converted to black-and-white, then inverted

Reading Glasses Photoelasticity Birefringence in action

Please don't be bound by these pictures, but instead, use them to kick-start your ideas. Let your imagine run free. I look forward to what everyone comes up with. Have fun!

The fine print:

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.
The Challenge will run until midnight February 14th, 2016, whichever time zone you are in.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days, and will allow an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera (film or digital) can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

I'll go with this one, though I may change it again, vacillating between images at the moment.

Scomatic, you've posted two photos -- the glass mushroom and the fireworks. I'll assume the glass mushroom is your official entry.

Great showing, everyone! Bring on more...

Was shooting at a park downtown recently just for the fun of it. This shot is rotated 90º clockwise from the original.

Kevin, to show your image, instead of using the "link" BBcode, use the "insert image" BBcode, which is IMG and /IMG, each of these inside square brackets. OR, when in the edit window, click on the icon that has a little mountain with a sun in it, then paste the link in the pop-up window that comes up.

Ah, this is a good idea! I have a similar picture, rotated 180°. Now that you made me think of it, it would have been a good entry this week. Since I have already posted another picture, this sundown picture is not competing. Just to show how to make an rather boring sundown a little bit more interesting... :-)

I did use the mountain/sun icon, paste link method when I created the post. However the image didn't show up in the post, only an image placeholder. The image was 1024x1024, the max allowable. I thought this might be why it wasn't displaying. I shrunk the image by 5%, replaced the larger one in my album with the smaller one, and tried re-posting using the method above. It still didn't display. I don't know why the URL link showed up in the post; I didn't do that deliberately. Please let me know what you did to get the picture to display.

I don't think that an image larger than the stipulated size limit would have caused your trouble in posting the picture, Kevin. In any event, this is how I brought up your picture. I looked at the page "source code" and identified the URL for your photo, then put that URL between BBcode tags, which are IMG and /IMG, each of those with square brackets around them. I can't show you the actual code or the browser will just show you the photo.

OK, I finally got it to work. The problem was that the link I pasted ended in .html; it needed to be .jpg. You can take down your post with my picture in it. Thanks for your help.

Someone called me and said there's a chef sitting atop a pile of rocks on the side of the road during a construction project. I show up and look around the area. There he was, a statute of a very happy chef on the rocks. No one knew who put the guy up there but the crews left him alone until they eventually had to start putting the rock down on the road. Done! Happy to help, though I don't know how much of that I offered. Glad you could figure out the glitch.
