PROJECT 52-8-10- Lens- Prime lens/fixed focal lens
Posted By: noelcmn, 03-07-2016, 11:27 PM

Welcome to Project 52-8 for the year 2016. The theme for the next couple of weeks will be lenses. We all suffer from LBA, at one stage or another. Opportunity is given to show off our lenses. This week it is Prime lenses/fixed focal lens. Here is introduction taken from Wikepedia "The term prime has come to be used as the opposite of zoom; that is, a prime lens is a fixed-focal-length, or unifocal lens, while a zoom lens has a variable focal length. While a prime lens of a given focal length is less versatile than a zoom, it is often of superior optical quality, wider maximum aperture, lighter weight, smaller size. These advantages stem from having fewer moving parts, optical elements optimized for one particular focal length, and a less complicated lens formula which means that they suffer from fewer problems of optical aberration. The larger maximum aperture (smaller f-number) allows photography in lower light, and a shallower depth of field".
A bit close to last weeks subject, but this one opens it a bit more, and there are some incredible photos on the Forum taken with the likes of the Limited 15mm , 17mm, FA77 and the legendary M50. This challenge has not appeared in Project 52 before, well, not that I can trace, so it will be an interesting challenge. Hopefully it will not exclude anyone who does not have a prime lens. I only have 1, an old one but will give it a try. Examples posted below are from the "Post your prime portraits" thread under Mini Challenges, Games and Photo stories page. Are they not just exquisite?

My apologies, this week is a bit late. Too many things on the plate again.

Images for Project 52-8-10 are to be taken between Monday 7 March 2016 through to Sunday 13th March 2016. Closing times is midnight in your time Zone.

Rules
1. Anyone and everyone interested in challenge is eligible. The goal continues to be to have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques
with fellow Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore. The theme/sub-concepts are chosen by the facilitator every week. You are only
required to submit a photo taken during the week of the challenge, and in keeping with the theme/sub-concept.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-8 thread for the week. Explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non Pentax cameras are allowed. Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot,
Medium Format, et cetera.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is active to be eligible for judging. It is up to the discretion of the current weeks
Judge to accept or decline early/late entries i.e. a day earlier or a day late. Usually there is some flexibility here to allow as many entrants as possible. BUT
PLEASE DO NOT POST IMAGES TAKEN DAYS OR WEEKS OUTSIDE THE PERIOD OF THE CHALLENGE. TRY TO KEEP IT AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE
TO THE TIME FRAME.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.
9. The WINNER of each weekly challenge is the JUDGE of the next weeks Project 52-8 and may not participate in the challenge.
10. The host/facilitator (in this case noelcmn) may participate in the challenge, provided he/she is not the judge.

I've been concentrating on my Panasonic Cameras (LX7 and GX7) for an upcoming trip. I will see about this.

OK, I'll go first. I've been enjoying my legacy prime manual lenses, and believe that shooting primes disciplines the mind (as well as controlling it, I have under good authority -- I look forward to adding the DA 15mm Ltd to my stable). Anyway, with thick fog today, I was able to shoot...

I had a couple ideas for this challenge but, weather and some minor health issues kept me from going out to take them. So I'll go with this instead. Taken with my DA 70, ISO 800, f4. 1/60 sec.

I love my SMC Pentax M Macro 1:400/100.
Sometimes I supplement it with add-on close-up lenses.
This image is cross posted.

Aiming

How far does it fly? Testing paper plane darts - which do indeed stick in a Styrofoam target. I did not know this before today.

First of a burst taken in our dim grey cloudy weather using an adapted 80mm Carl Zeiss Jena Biometar in Pentacon Six mount. The prime at f/2.8 provided good separation from the busy background and maintaining a fast shutter speed for the action - missing the moment when the plane will just have left the hand even at 8 frames per second though. While there are zoom lenses at this focal length and aperture, I don't have one. I do love the ability to step back a little with 80mm and the crisp subject separation and nice background rendering of this lens, which makes it perfect for my Lens-Prime Lens submission.

This was taken with the HD DA 15 Ltd at F8, 1/80, ISO 100 on a tripod. I really intended to use a different lens since I used this in the Favorite thread a couple weeks ago, but as things ended up it was the only prime I used all week.

I'll keep this open for a few more hours until my lunch time - just in case someone took pictures over the weekend and hasn't posted yet - and then I'll close it and do the judging thing... I can already tell it's going to be really really hard!
