Winner - Weekly Challenge #349
Posted By: atupdate, 05-12-2016, 04:13 AM

I really enjoyed looking at all of the entries for this challenge (yes, even the dead mouse ). There were several entries worthy of be chosen the winner of this challenge. But in the end, there were two images that made me wish I had taken the shot.

Winner: SMF - The lighting and post processing of this shot made the straws look like a stack of aluminum billets to me. Being a Metallurgical Engineer, this appealed to me greatly. Such a simple idea but in the end, it makes the viewer wonder what is it while at the same time, being very enjoyable to look at. I wish I had thought of this.

2nd Place: Hattifnatt - The creativity of the shot is very high and the lighting for this image had to be difficult to set up. Too strong of shadows and the composition becomes muddled. Too strong of reflections and the subjects would have not been as strong. Great job.

3rd Place: noelcmn - What makes this image standout is the lighting. The lighting brings out all of the complexity and the details in this simple glass of water. Proof again that great lighting helps make great shots.

Honorable Mentions: Tamia and Tessfully - Great creativity in these images.

Thank you to everyone that entered.

I am surprised and honored, and I greatly admire the other entries and the photographers who created them!

Tim, thanks very much for your judging and comments.

The image was captured in my dark basement. The Diamond brand smoothie straws were on a table and were backlit by a battery operated light — like a flashlight, but with a handle.

I like vertical and horizontal treatments of the subject matter.

A fellow member of the Midland (Michigan) Camera Club kindly suggested where I could buy the straws. (Try a dollar store or a grocery store.) He had been photographing such straws during a camera club session.

Best wishes to all.

Well done, Stu. Congratulations! I really like that photo of yours -- at first I thought it was copper tubing. The tones and colors are compelling, a mysterious picture. Thanks for telling how you achieved that photo. Congratulations Hattifnatt, Noel, and Tess for your intriguing pictures, too. Thanks, Tim, for the HM, and for judging. I looked forward to seeing each entrants' picture and enjoyed hearing how they were made.
