Challenge #377-What are you proud of?
Posted By: charliezap, 01-14-2017, 08:06 AM

We all take pride in something.Maybe it's your country-people we know-iconic landmarks-family-or maybe something you built. The possibilities are endless so enter a shot that instills and evokes a spirit of pride that you can share with others.I'll be very interested in seeing the submissions and I'll be looking for that shot that fits the theme along with a "WOW" factor that will help me make up my mind as to who the top spot goes to.----charliezap

The challenge will close on midnight my time on Sunday January 22nd 2017.

I hope that I covered all the bases so get working and most of all have fun with this challenge.

2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.

6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.

There is not much that I am proud of (pastors should not be proud hey) but this would come the closest. SASOL-( I think stands for South African Synthetic Oils Ltd- though historically it was started at a place called Sasolburg) was born out of the years that South Africa (SA) faced embargoes and economic sanctions during the Apartheid years, which included among other things oil. The company produced oil-from-coal, of which SA has plenty. Necessity is the mother of invention as the saying goes and this allowed SA to survive economically despite the sanctions. The company has since gone on to become a global economic player in the world, and today produces, besides oils and fuels, also chemicals, Polymers, explosives and gas. It certainly was the pride of the then Apartheid government. and remains still as an emblem of tenacity and survival to be proud of still today. It is represented is several countries in the world.

An old picture, my daughter is now at University studying Equine Science. Here she is a few years ago with her favourite pony (not hers, owned by a friend!)

What I am proud of...The HMS Georgette.

I built this 18' two masted square rigged pirate ship for my 3 kids to play on. I built it without plans (other than the ones I sketched on paper). It used a lot of recycled timber and miss-tints from the paint store. I used 3 generations of tools to build it. For sailing buffs, it is modeled after Brigs from about 1812. The jib works as do the fore and aft main sails. The top gallants are for show. It has a ship's wheel, binnacle, and cannon with cannon balls made from concrete. The cannon kit has a worm, wet and dry sponge and rammer. There is a ship's bell and anchor. The ratlines and shrouds are made traditionally. Also, a sounding log for measuring depth (scaled down fathoms) and chip log to measure knots (also scaled down knots). The ship was dedicated to all Mothers. As I portray a soldier in the British Army in 1812, the ship is named after my late mother, The HMS Georgette.

Dimensions are 18 feet from bow to stern, mid ships 3 feet above sea level and the poop deck four feet. The width is 5 foot. There are also sound effects for waves, creaking wood and various other sound effects in a loop. I am kinda proud of this, as are my kids too. Many pirate parties and Nerf gun battles have occurred on deck.

Sorry about his photo, almost all of them are on my camera phone. I have only a few of the completed ship with sails using my K-r. This one shows it after a first snow fall, sails, furled. The ship's wheel and binnacle are stowed as is the main flag.
