Picture of The Week (POTW) 438 — Jan. 8-21
Posted By: smf, 01-15-2017, 02:48 PM

Welcome to another round of Picture of the Week (POTW).

POTW is a great spot to show off six or fewer shots you take or are editing within the thread's date range. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

Please:

• consider including in your post any special circumstances or tips on technique or equipment which might be interesting to others.

• identify your camera and lens if that information is easily available to you.

And please invite other Pentaxians to join us.

Some rules:
1) No theme, just post your favorite pix
2) Six or fewer images per person per thread to prevent thread bloat
3) Any Pentax, Ricoh or Samsung camera, film or digital

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator, via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW thread hosts: 1 Peter Zack, 2 Eaglerapids, 3 rmtagg, 4 Peter Zack, 5 daacon, 6 Bramela, 7 mtnbearhug, 8 dantuyhoa, 9 gawan,10 roentarre, 11 daacon, 12 Kris, 13 A naturalist identified the European starling on the right as an adult non-breeding and the one on the left as a transitional (changing from non to breeding plumage).
The image was captured through the glass of a sliding door with a Pentax K-S2 and smc Pentax-F 1:4.5-5.6 100-300mm at ISO 1000, 1/400, f/6.3.

Early experimentation

first attempts at using the HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW at the Topeka Zoological Park. These Scarlet Macaws were in the Tropical Rain Forest Exhibit

This winter has been just terribly grey and dreary here in Michigan. Yesterday the sun actually came out and I took a walk downtown on the river. I took the K3 and a few lenses. I recently purchased a HD 16-85 so I gave it a workout. The main reason I decided on getting the 16-85 was for the 16-18mm range so most of my shots were in that range.

16mm f5.6 ISO100

16mm f6.3 ISO100

At the other end, 85mm f5.6 ISO100.

13mm f5.6 ISO100 4s

Having some fun with the DA*50-135.
90mm f3.2 ISO400 1/80s

135mm f3.5 ISO400 1/80's

Snow has dominated my world lately. Crested Butte got over 100 inches in 11 days.
K-1 & D FA 15-30

We got less here 1000 Ft. lower but it was still a lot!

I'm able to ski stuff that often doesn't have enough snow.
I shot this using interval mode and balancing the camera on a signpost.
K-3 & DA* 16-50

I'm shooting skiing with my K-3 and 16-50 because I managed to lose my K-S2 and 18-135 in the snow at the ski area over the weekend. It fell into the snow and just disappeared into all that powder. I'm hoping it gets found but I suspect I will never see it again. Had some good shots on it too. Dang!

No time for pictures in the moment so here is just one. There are some birds further up - this must attract a cat:

[can I post more than one entry??? in total number I am within the limit on # of photos]

images also posted to the HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW thread

I love the big cats, especially the eyes.

just got these photos of the male lion and one of the Sumatran Tiger Cubs out at the Topeka Zoological Park this afternoon, was experimenting hand holding my K 3 + HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW.

first photo, a true snap shot as I entered the fake kopje the lion was up next to the glass window and starting to walk away, only had time to bring camera up to the eye and press the shutter without bracing.:

Focal Length 150.0mm (35mm equivalent: 225mm)
Exposure Time 1/200s (0.0050)
Aperture F/4.5
close focus

2nd photo: had time to set up shot and brace as tiger was at the far end of the enclosure and not moving.

Focal Length 450.0mm (35mm equivalent: 675mm)
Exposure Time 1/400s (0.0025)
Aperture F/5.6
distant focus

Foggy morning around Sale Creek, TN

I took these photos last Saturday near my home in Sale, Creek, TN. There was a nice fog that had rolled in from the night before. All three were taken with a Pentax K-1 and a DA 35mm lens.
