Weekly Challenge #385 Highlights.
Posted By: mattb123, 04-18-2017, 08:59 PM

I picked highlights as the theme for this challenge.

I find with so many subjects, getting the light so that it creates highlights can really add something special. When I'm shooting I'm often looking for them, or changing my position to see some. Of course they can introduce challenges too but this is what we do. So I challenge you to show me your highlights. They can be in or out of focus (which can be a fun effect), on the subject, background or whereever. Show me your best pics that the highlight(s) make even better.

Examples:
I like how highlights can draw the eye to parts of a landscape:

They can help make a subject pop from the background:

Or create swirly bokeh under the right circumstances.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

I applaud the images in this thread!

Here's one I recently captured with handheld Pentax K-S2 with SMC Pentax-F 1:4.5-5.6 100-300mm in wetlands at Chippewa Nature Center in Midland County, Michigan.

Cool, smf! Really woodcut-esque.

Pondered long on this one...many of my photos use highlights, especially "glints" in my railway pictures, so I nearly put on of those in- e.g. 9F at Wander's Curve | 92212 heads round Wander's Curve in t? | Flickr. I then thought of this photo. or more specifically the original, colour, version of this photo. I did a mono conversion for this competition. Although almost a silhouette, actually the highlights on the trumpet, the musician's face and the light beams are what make the picture!

Nice topic! Tamia, I really like how much color and interest you managed to insert into a picture of flowing water!

Here's my contribution. Highlights pretty much transform the whole picture, but especially the cactus:
Thanks, WileyB! Your photo's quite nice as well. Love those highlights.

I have edited this to reflect Rule 3 (which I got caught not reading).

So here is my single entry.

The Lonesome Grebe
I saw this guy all by himself on the pond early in the morning. The light was lovely and the ripples of its swimming picked up the sun in reflection.

Enjoy.

Lots of great entries! Still a couple of days left to make my job harder. I'll close this at midnight Tuesday (MDT).

There are some really good photos and creative interpretations of "highlights" submitted for this contest. Not sure if this would be considered a highlight of the subject or merely backlit, but I feel that the light helps the white sulphur butterfly to stand out from the background.
