Weekly Challenge #385 Highlights.
Posted By: mattb123, 04-18-2017, 08:59 PM

I picked highlights as the theme for this challenge.

I find with so many subjects, getting the light so that it creates highlights can really add something special. When I'm shooting I'm often looking for them, or changing my position to see some. Of course they can introduce challenges too but this is what we do. So I challenge you to show me your highlights. They can be in or out of focus (which can be a fun effect), on the subject, background or whereever. Show me your best pics that the highlight(s) make even better.

Examples:
I like how highlights can draw the eye to parts of a landscape:

They can help make a subject pop from the background:

Or create swirly bokeh under the right circumstances.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

At a resort in Thailand, the gardens abounded with Spider Lilies I took quite some time to find one with the stamens isolated against dark background. Some judicious processing helped bring out the rich gold.

I'm going to go a little artsy on this one. I call this the Lake of Friendship; with the highlights / sun glare providing the lake and Moe the friendship.

I've had comments where people thought Moe must have thought he was in trouble because he was walking with his head down. This is Moe being Moe. We like to say that Moe has an Eeyore complex - "I'll get there eventualliy" in my best Eeyore like voice.

"Highlight of the morning"

Mother Nature did herself proud when she highlighted this shot of Niagara Falls when we were on the 27th floor of the Fallsview Casino and Resort several years ago.--charliezap

Love this subject and beautiful entries already. I'll go with an interesting river ledge that's a lot more interesting with rich reflected colors.

Nice topic! Tamia, I really like how much color and interest you managed to insert into a picture of flowing water!

Here's my contribution. Highlights pretty much transform the whole picture, but especially the cactus:

Frosty morning highlights

Took this back in January. We had had a light dusting of snow overnight as well as a frost . The light I thought was just about as perfect as it gets. The sun was rising behind trees behind me and just lit the whole tree like a light had been switched on. Was worth the 20 min walk to get there .

Thanks Steven. It is a broad leaf draped over a curled leaf of the same plant.
