Chiaroscuro is a painting technique, developed during the Renaissance, that uses strong tonal between light and dark to model three-dimensional forms, often to dramatic effect. Famously used by Rembrandt


For this week's challenge, post your pictures that use these strong tonal contrasts - could be a portrait, but could also be a dramatic landscape with features accentuated by dramatic lighting, or maybe a still life??





















Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

I'll have a go at the subject with this icesculpture.
It was at a icecarving exhibit with subject music.

I read "The underlying principle is that solidity of form is best achieved by the light falling against it." from the Wikipedia entry on chiaroscuro, so I narrowed my choices to solid forms, not sweeping scenes with high contrast between foreground and background and I don't want to post pictures of relatives when I don't have their permission. Which left me with "stiller" life photographs. These crocuses are first out of the ground in our backyard and this picture uses morning sunlight to illuminate the petals.

Taken inside of Louis Tussaud's wax museum on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. We have Elvis--Marilyn-Bogart and James Dean. The place was spooky as I was just about the only person there. I expected one of the exhibits to move.--charliezap
