Wood Duck Drakes in full mating plumage are so impressive

these photos are of of one such Drake, taken at one time at the Topeka Zoological Park. These ducks are not captive but are free to migrate These photos are from a series of photographs all taken about 2 PM less than 2 minutes apart as the Drake changed position. A Hen was less than 1 foot away at the time.

This series of photos is best viewed from bottom to top. The images were captured with a handheld K-S2 and smc Pentax-F 1:4.5-5-6 100-300mm at Pinconning Park — a Bay County park on Saginaw Bay at Pinconning, Michigan.

Although the bird has the black legs and feet of a Great Egret, its bill is black instead of yellow.

the 70-200 is a beast to carry, but definitely has the goods.
