Posted By: aaacb, 08-28-2017, 05:04 PM

Welcome to Picture of the Week (POTW) for the week ending 28 August 2017. Thanks rjbrett for inviting me to host!

POTW is a great spot to show off six or fewer shots you take or are editing within the thread's date range. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week, that is 21 August to 4 September.

To post your great photos, just hit reply and attach away

Please:

• consider including in your post any special circumstances or tips on technique or equipment which might be interesting to others.

• identify your camera and lens if that information is easily available to you.

And please invite other Pentaxians to join us.

Some rules:
1) No theme, just post your favorite pix
2) Six or fewer images per person per thread to prevent thread bloat
3) Any Pentax, Ricoh or Samsung camera, film or digital

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one. If the thread doesn't start, please contact the host, via PM.

Love your timing on that third Hamlet shot there! - I've got floral shots this week. The first was taken with a Pentax HD DA 70mm, and the second and third a 50mm Super-Multi-Coated Macro-Takumar. I'm so glad I bought this lens (thanks again krazykat) - the 1:2 magnification is just right for me as I'm more interested in close up than true macro photography.

Y'know, it's a good thing I tried my hand at this contest this week. It seems the last time I used my camera (and ignored all its "battery depleted" messages), it reset itself to January of 2006. I might not have caught that right away if I hadn't looked at this contest.
So I popped open GIMP, did a tiny bit of processing, and I bring you these two from Seoul Station and one from the park attached to a local hotel.

Thanks for hosting this week.....

Spent some time in North Wales last week.. The second image shows an old packhorse bridge that was preserved when the A5 was built in the 1820s..

How do you get the bugs to cooperate? I saw the loveliest black dragonfly today but couldn't get the camera out fast enough to get its picture.

LOL!
I'm no expert, but a few hints- Especially for dragonflies. 1. Patience, 2. Patience, 3. Patience ! Seriously, patience is the key, then there is slow movements real slow movements, as any fast/sudden action will scare them away.

Dragonflies will usually visit particular "spots" on its flying route, for all kinds of reasons, including mating and foraging. If you study them long enough you will get a idea of where they will land, position yourself there, sit still, slow movements and you should be a-for-away.

Also read the other insect thread-show me you insects- where you will find a lot of help with set-ups and techniques.

some thoughts from a non expert

on pollinators

1 preset your gear as much as possible, what f stop, speed etc

2 look, once you find them, first observe before attempting any photos

- they usually are not alone

- they can move in patterns

- try not to disturb their " normal " activity, don't get too close

- hope they are not the " aggressive " type, I have never encountered any ( knock on wood ) and am always been ignored.

3 try multiple exposures, burst shutter or just fast trigger finger instead of waiting for the " perfect " photo

this has worked well for me when I see a bee actually enter the blossom and I am waiting for it to emerge for that " perfect " shot

4 try hand held, tripod/monopod, natural light/flash, shades or no shades

5 try all lenses and all techniques, you can be amazed what you get from a good crop and pp work - so I have tried macro, " normal " and telephoto [ nothing looks funnier to a bystander than me standing next to a flower blossom inches away with my DFA 150 - 450 mm zoom mounted on the K 3 ]

Keep trying

you will do well
