Weekly Challenge #400- Abstracts with Water
Posted By: noelcmn, 09-19-2017, 03:52 AM

Next to birds, Abstracts form the next largest subject that I photograph the most. And in particular I enjoy the challenge of creating abstracts with water. For this weeks challenge, let's see some water abstracts. Scope for playing with light, composition and colors are ample, and most lenses can be used for this medium. I look forward to your submissions.
The Challenge closes at midnight on Wednesday 27th September 2017.
The challenge submission must contain water in one form or another. And it would be wonderful if you can share your technique as well.

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh (DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge

Good luck.

Some examples:

Spray Bottle half full

blotches of oil from birds gathered in a corner at Zoo Lake

Condensed water under a bowl lid, strategically placed above some colorful advertising paper.

Smoke and Ice

Neither smoke or ice was used here. Instead, it is a combination of water, food coloring, oil and wrapping paper. The water and oil were placed in a clear glass plate suspended over the wrapping paper. Food coloring was swirled into the mix. Standing above the whole mess and snapping away left me these results. Lighting consisted of sunlight through an adjacent window.

i've got a few of these to share, pretty old stuff(ca 2010), but when I was learning photography, I liked to find subject matter in the backyard and gravitated to shooting from within the swimming pool. Here are a few that utilize short tele focal length, shallow DOF, and hanging colorful towels or pool toys on a lounge chair to render the colorful reflections in the water.

Liquid Diet

Tiny Bubbles

Water Abstract

all shot using old Takumar glass (S-M-C105 or 200)

Splash!

My kids jumping around in the Gulf of Mexico on a very sunny August day, at Crystal River, Florida. Taken with K3 and an old Promaster 60-300 lens, at ISO 100 and shutter at 1/20. This was the first time I had taken this lens out and I was really happy with the color rendition and the sharpness (when I wasn't trying for the blurred look...)

The first shot is my entry. The 2nd shot is to show where I got the idea.It was a rainy snowy day with many drops on the window. When I used the macro lens I was pleased to see what it saw.----charliezap

One of only 5,500+ guests on the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier near the Coronado islands off the coast of San Diego CA. Totally glassy sea - when sitting on the bleachers next to the flight deck, I could barely see the horizon move.

Just for fun...
