Weekly Challenge #415 - Rule of Thirds
Posted By: atupdate, 02-15-2018, 09:54 AM

One of the composition rules everyone follows when they first start getting serious about photography. Show me your best.

This challenge will close at Midnight EDT on Thursday February 22nd.

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh (DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge

Here are some examples from my files.

Good luck everyone.

Tim

The example shots are already very interesting, and I look forward to seeing other submissions. I must confess that most of the time, I have trouble using the rule of thirds. Maybe it's the kind of photography I do, but whenever I try to apply it by framing or cropping the image looks unbalanced. or something I want to show is lopped off. Also there are so many other composition considerations for wildlife shots - more space above the head than below the feet, more space in the direction the creature is looking/moving, the "rule" tends to get lost in the shuffle. Anyway, having said that, here's one shot where it seems to work...

Like Jacamar, I don't always adhere to the rule. I try to get close but rarely find a perfect situation. This one does and I did consciously take care to achieve it.

The rule of thirds, mmmm.
I think about it (sometimes).
But mostly I only think about it!

An interesting theme. I think that there are thirds in this shot times more than one.--charliezap

This bird ended up in my front yard this afternoon. Took me some time to find out what it was.

A good start so far. Hope others have time this weekend to find their entry.

I sometimes have trouble knowing if a photo is following the rule of thirds, I tend to do it naturally when I frame a shot so haven't put a lot of thought into it. I think this one might qualify, even though the horizon is almost in the middle, the hills seem to make it follow the rule of thirds? Hmm...

I picked this one because the foreground (stones etc) takes about a third of the image, and the tower's framing also follows the rule of thirds.

I am mostly shooting landscapes and since this is the only rule that I know, I try to stick with it most of the times.

This is from a recent winter hike. Unfortunately, I got stuck in the icy, steep parking area!
