Picture of the Week (POTW) # 492 - Covering period 22 February to 7 March 2018
Posted By: rjbrett, 03-01-2018, 05:23 AM

Welcome to Picture of the Week (POTW) for the period 22 February to 7 March 2018. I’m pleased to be hosting this wonderful and diverse thread once again, and all are invited to contribute.

POTW is a great spot to show off six or fewer shots you take or are editing within the thread's date range. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

To post your great photos, just hit reply and attach away

feel free to start immediately, if not sooner

Please:

• consider including in your post any special circumstances or tips on technique or equipment which might be interesting to others.

• identify your camera and lens if that information is easily available to you.

And please invite other Pentaxians to join us.

Some rules:
1) No theme, just post your favorite pix
2) Six or fewer images per person per thread to prevent thread bloat
3) Any Pentax, Ricoh or Samsung camera, film or digital

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM), but if you are interested and willing to host POTW, please send me a PM, before I contact others.

The irregular planting of the clipped hedge in the first photo catches my eye every time I drive past. There’s something self-effacing about it that reminds me of a photographic exhibition reviewed in the Gaurdian called “I’m not here”. I found it following a link someone had posted somewhere here on the forum. The hedge seems to me to be like a pair of hands held palm outwards, moving irregularly side to side to hide someone’s face. The photo was taken with the Super Takumar 35mm f3.5 at f8.

The tightly stacked terraces emphasising the steep slope to the tall verticals of the church above are what caught my eye in the second photo. I went back the next day and took this photo with a Cosina Cosinon W 24mm f2.8 and a Mir orange contrast filter.

The grass heads I caught isolated from their backgrounds by the early morning sun with the SMC Pentax 35-70mm f4 zoom. The butterfly was taken with a TOU Five Star 200mm f4.5 from about 4 or so metres, and the Stock with the Industar 61 50mm f2.8 macro. I’d actually taken this picture thinking I’d try it out in black and white, but have used a preset, after making adjustments in the black and white module of Topaz Studio, called “luminosity”. Not exactly sure what it does, but looks OK on some pics. Those hairs actually are growing out of the petals!

Wonderful opening shots rjbrett, particularly like that backlit stalk- combination Backlit and Minimalist always work well. Thought I'd jump in quickly this week, as it looks like I'm gonna have a few busy days ahead.
Tried some BIF again- Egyptian Geese are always obliging at Zoo Lake

Thanks for hosting, rjbrett.

Below are three of the images I captured with my tripod-mounted K-S2 and either a 100-mm or 55mm lens (legacy Pentax lenses) during the Midland (Michigan) Camera Club's close-up photography night. Several of the club members previously attended a two-day workshop on close-up photography offered by award-winning close-up photographer Mike Moats. At the club meeting, some of his tips were presented before club members went to a number of stations in the room to photograph a variety of subjects.
Moats' website at Mike Moats | Award Winning Macro Photographer | Sterling, MI has a link to his blog.

What wonderful contributions! What can I say? - I could go on for quite some time , but will just ask, SMF, what the objects in your second shot are? I love the low key lustrous look these have.

Looking through the photos on Mike Moats web site it's interesting that many of them have a drawn, or painterly, look about them. Very effective images.

Thanks very much.
The three objects are door hardware.

Best wishes,

2 black dogs and a foster

Cross posted from Your Pet A Day thread. Moe and Izzy were both dogs that we fostered and then adopted. Rocky is our current foster puppy. All pictures taken this week.

I guess you could say my photography is going to the dogs.
