Weekly challenge #419 - Panning
Posted By: Doctor X, 03-29-2018, 12:01 AM

This week challenge is "Panning". We all know that Pentax is not an AF monster, but let's put it to the test.

This challenge will close at Midnight on Thursday April 5.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh (DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge

Here's a pic, to get you started (the subject is not bound to motor vehicles though):

Good luck!

Since there's no explicit requirement for panning shots with motion, I'd say panoramas fit the theme as well, but please confirm

Edit: removed picture to not clutter the thread, see the response below

Panoramas are not exactly what I had in mind for this challenge. Let's stick with panning with moving subjects.

Photographing a basketball game without moving the camera is pointless in my opinion and panning has the added benefit of allowing slower shutter speeds, which is rather helpful in the poor lighting conditions of a high school gymnasium. The shutter speed is 1/160 second, which everyone will tell you is too slow for sports. Topaz Denoise strips the lens description from EXIF data, so I will tell you that this shot was taken with the DA 18-135 zoom.

This is the only shot that I recall involving "panning", with a Pentax, anyway...

A pan from last week. The loco is a Maunsell S15 built in 1936 and seen here running on the Bluebell Railway in Sussex.

Sorry for the delay, but I was away and far from civilization for a few days.

The verdict:

Winner - HAMA. His photo reflects perfectly the assignment. The background is pretty clean and following a speeding sports car at 1/50s is indeed challenging.

Runner-up - StephenHampshire. Beautiful subject, although he could have chosen a slower shutter speed for a more powerful panning effect.

Third - Vaskebjorn's duck. Sharp subject, clean background and a different approach.

A few words about the other submissions:
- jchorst - although the panning is technically correct, the background is very busy and the subject doesn't stand out as it should. Maybe a different point of view would have been a better choice.
- RGlasel - I would have preferred that one of the players be the subject and not the ball.
- BATMON - unfortunately not the best composition, with one wheel getting out of the frame and other in.
- nobody - not panning in my opinion. Camera stands still, the train and people are moving. A different interpretation of speed.
- sealonsf - good intention, but again a busy background and the taxi not so sharp.
- SpecialK - funny!
- noelcmn - good panning, again the busy background but the cyclist stands out. One of the candidates for the podium, but the probable massive crop affects the image resolution.

Congrats to all!
