#454 Show me some "wow"
Posted By: charliezap, 03-31-2019, 09:07 AM

Once again I'm humbled and honored to be hosting the weekly challenge

We have all seen and probably have taken some shots that have a certain amount of "wow" factor to them. The subject could be anything under the sun that impacts us when viewed. That being said let's see what you have to move my "Wow Meter" The challenge will close at midnight Sunday April 7th.

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh (DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge

Here are some examples that may have a certain amount of "wow" to them. I"m showing you mine--let me see yours.--charliezap

This is a hard one as “wow” is very personal I think. Nevertheless, attached my entry. Taken last week just around the corner from my house.

Monarch + Milkweed

Taken August 2017 at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, using a K-S2 with the 100/2.8 D-FA WR. The focus wasn't quite right, but I liked this composition a lot better than the others I took at the same time. The flower is "Showy Milkweed", which is pretty "wow" by itself, and the Monarch in the background gives a neat sense of depth.

I took this photo on Saturday in Kowloon Park, where they have a flock of pink flamingos. It's very heavily cropped (about 1/9 the full-size photo) and yet the detail on the beak (especially the lamellae, which I had to look up) "wows" me. This was taken with my magic lens (DA*300) and my still relatively new K-1 Mark II. The picture also makes me a bit dizzy...

Except it's actually a Red Kite (Milvus milvus).

In the summer of 2016, I chartered a two hour aerial tour of the Kluane Icefields. The Cessna 205 I was in wouldn't go above 17,000 feet, so this is a side view of the south-eastern face of Mt. Logan. If the field of view was any wider, the window frame would have been in the picture, even so less than half of this mountainside is in view. This is a massive mountain (with a greater circumference than any other non-volcanic mountain in the world), my other pictures at 36mm and 68mm give a better sense of how close the plane was, but only show a small portion of the mountain.

Perhaps not the best choice in a mountainous area?

The airport we flew out of is only 2150 feet above sea level. At 17,000 feet we were still well above the icefield below us and the only two other mountains in the St. Elias range above 17,000 ft are about 25 miles away. Believe it or not, Mt. Logan is less than 50 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The Cessna 205 is piston-engined and was popular as a bush plane (there is a research station on the icefields serviced by ski-planes); this one has a pressurized cabin, but it wasn't designed for high altitude flying. Part of the "wow" factor.
