#460 - Urban B&W
Posted By: sealonsf, 06-06-2019, 10:12 AM

Welcome to Weekly Challenge #460 - Urban B&W

We recently explored rural areas and squirrels, this week, I'd like to see urban (city or town) photos in black and white. Plus points for gritty/Film Noir-ish photos but anything goes as long as the photo is black and white or sepia and taken in a city or town. Have fun and make my job of judging difficult! I'm looking forward to seeing your photos.

Here are a few examples:

Shanty Town, Lima, Peru

San Francisco Skyline

Kunming, China Through Hotel Room Window

Paris

Edinburgh

Palermo

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

The Challenge will run until midnight Friday, 14 June, whichever time zone you are in.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Just in case this gets rotated again (as apparently all my portrait photos do and I do not know why).
This one was not taken at the equator

I don't normally do black and white (technically the one I'm submitting is greyscale), so I went out this evening to try to find an urban scene that would be better in black and white than colour. Converting from colour actually makes this picture clearer and the signs more distinct. The street is very dry, the conversion makes it look wet.

Edinburgh Steps

There's always stairs like this all over the city, but getting composition and person in the right place... not so easy.

I should hopefully gain points for both being gritty and noir with this image.

Very cool topic!

Here's a shot I took in Kowloon a couple of months ago with a photography Meetup group. It was supposed to be a night-time, black-and-white project but we started too early and ended before it truly got dark. All these styrofoam boxes were from a market. They do reuse them but eventually they get beat up and discarded and end up floating around the oceans somewhere... This part of Kowloon is allegedly one of the most densely-populated areas on the planet.
