#465 Neon Signs
Posted By: ramseybuckeye, 07-19-2019, 05:42 AM

Something I like to shoot but don't get to do that often is neon signs, or signs made from tubes containing gas. Neon can be challenging because different colors of neon signs are usually different gases, and can have wildly different levels of brightness. Please only neon signs, not illuminated plastic signs or light bulb signs, unless they also have neon elements. Let's see what you've got!

The Challenge will run from now next Friday night, 26 July 2019 at 9:00PM Eastern Daylight Time (US). Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

This is the closest I get to a neon photo. I hope it qualifies.

This is at the Neon Sign Museum in Las Vegas, which uses energy-saving LED's for its own sign...

I may well have to sit this one out...

Neon signs and the Highlands of Scotland just don't go together, unless I can come across a wee one somewhere, as a perhaps a shop display this week.

This is my favourite of all time. Down town San Antonio Texas

The way I treat neon is to shoot with spot metering on the tube itself, and then raise the black level in post processing. It may take a few steps to get the background dark

If you resample in between steps it helps reduce banding

Not in the highlands, but for sure in Glasgow, Oban, Edinburgh, and Inverness

Picton, Ontario. A quick snap on our way to the restaurant with my (then) new GR-III.

Thanks for the hints, but some of your suggestions are not exactly local to me, Glasgow 3h24m -187 miles, Oban 2h17m - 93 miles and Edinburgh 3h14m - 172 miles, so I'll give these three a miss.

I checked out Inverness today and couldn't see anything that worthy... I'll need to go back one evening when things may be more obvious.

I liked the way the color reflected off of the pavement when it was raining.--charliezap
