Challenge #488 "Critters big or small."
Posted By: charliezap, 02-24-2020, 01:32 PM

Plenty of latitude in this challenge concerning subject matter. Impress me with your presentation of the theme. If you make me say "That's cool" then you will probably be in the running for a top spot. Here are some examples to get the ball rolling.--charliezap

The Challenge will close Sunday March 1st at midnight.

The shot of the turkeys would be a great candidate for the caption contest.

There is a critter here. I won't say where you will have to look.

I was thinking of posting a photo of a tent caterpillar, but that's disgusting, not cool, so you get a picture of an impatient Whiskyjack (officially the Canada Jay, unofficially Camp Robber) instead.

These Critters are both pretty small, the Northern Saw Whet Owl is near the size of an American Robin, but stockier. The field mouse is much smaller. Look closely to see this owl has a mouse in its talons. It is saving it for later. I took this at Killdeer Plain Wildlife Area, a 9300 acre area consisting of lakes, grassland, and woodlands. Some of these owls migrate here for the Winter, there are a few pine areas in the mostly deciduous forests, with prairies close by, lots of hunting area for owls. The pine areas seem to be the daytime resting places for these owls.

Elm Sawfly
Looks quite muscular for something that doesn't sting or bite.

It's a lot darker than the ones we have in Ontario.

Maybe the further north they are, the darker they get? This photo was taken in Haines Junction, Yukon; definitely a Whiskyjack by the way it was eyeing the food I was cooking on the camp stove. I didn't notice any difference between it and the ones we get at home in Saskatoon, but I'm not an expert birder, either.

There are three subspecies but none as dark as yours. Juveniles are sooty overall though so maybe yours was transitioning into adult plumage.
