P52-9-13 Light: Contre-jour / Backlighting
Posted By: Tsukiouji, 05-10-2020, 04:51 PM

Digging further into ways of the light. These may easily be two separate themes - both been in P52 previous years - but can't help merging them into one.

Contre-jour (French for "against daylight") is a photographic technique in which the camera is pointing directly toward a source of light and an equivalent technique of painting.
Contre-jour produces backlighting of the subject. This effects usually hides details, causes a stronger contrast between light and dark, creates silhouettes and emphasizes lines and shapes.
from Wikipedia, 'Contre-jour'

In lighting design, backlighting is the process of illuminating the subject from the back. In other words, the lighting instrument and the viewer face each other, with the subject in between. This creates a glowing effect on the edges of the subject, while other areas are darker.
In the context of lighting design, the back light is sometimes called hair or shoulder light, because when lighting an actor or an actress, backlighting makes the edges the subject's hair glow if the hair is fuzzy. This can create an angelic halo type effect around the head.
Backlighting helps separate the subject and the background. Live theatre lighting designs often use backlighting to give a more three-dimensional appearance to actors or set elements, when front lighting alone would give a flat, two-dimensional look.
from Wikipedia, 'Backlighting (lighting design)'

Photos for the Week #13 competition are to be taken between May 11, 2020 and May 17, 2020

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-5 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non Pentax cameras are allowed.
Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot, Medium Format, et cetera. But no phones, please.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.

Just took this an hour or so ago, and seems to fit. Just playing around for the Daily in Challenge, as I had no time during the day to capture anything. My paper weight glass ball, onto which is stuck some board pins, and the torch light of my cell phone placed underneath, with a distance of about 2cm between the ball and the torch light. And too close to that dreaded Corona Virus.

had to get pretty low to block out afternoon sun from a tulip bed. dynamic range allowed shadows to retain so much info. K1 with adapted C/Y Zeiss 50/1.7.

I took this pic this morning, pretty bright backlight, It does have some of that glowing edge. I think the water reflected light on the front of the bird, so it got a little more light that it would have on land.

You wait for the sun to get in the position you want and then it disappears into clouds.

I do believe I am supposed to announce the winner for this one- and it is djb47 with Tsukioujia very close 2nd. I've chosen the winning image for two reasons, onebeing the fantastic colour palette and a great story line! Congrats djb47.
