P52-9-15 Light: Front light
Posted By: Tsukiouji, 05-24-2020, 04:25 PM

Possibly the least used direction of light in photography, it still can produce interesting results. Let's hit it!

Tips and references:
The Art and Style of Product Photography by J. Dennis Thomas
Understanding Lighting: Front Light, Back Light & Side Light by Geoff Harris

Photos for the Week #15 competition are to be taken between May 25, 2020 and May 31, 2020

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-5 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non Pentax cameras are allowed.
Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot, Medium Format, et cetera. But no phones, please.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.

Thank you djb47 and noelcmn for your entries; hopefully this challenge gets a couple more entries in the next couple of days, just to get more people involved. I'm having trouble right now finding the time to produce my own entry and I wonder if it wouldn't hurt if we accepted entries until the end of this week. I like the concept of having to focus on a particular technique and use the creativity of others as inspiration, but I need to put aside some time. What do the rest of you think about extending this challenge until June 7th and having it run in conjunction with the next challenge that Tsukiouji has already posted?

I don't mind extension, OK.

Took my old Minolta P&S for a ride last week, fine piece of hardware, though severely outdated now. Shot with fill flash too.

My plans to experiment with two off camera flashes were dashed when my venerable AF200T wouldn't respond to fresh batteries. The dreary wet weather derailed any plans to use fill flash with ambient light. so it's the little on board flash triggering a more powerful Metz flash on a tripod, which is bounced off the ceiling. I used manual settings to try to control the balance between the two flashes, so I could get a bit of shadow to provide some depth.

Well, I think it is time to close this Project 52 challenge. Thank you to djb47, noelcmn and Tsukiouji for posting entries, each of them was a little different take on the theme. I'm going to select Tsukiouji's entry as the winner, the fill in flash makes the water droplets stand out and I doubt if the same effect would have been achieved with just ambient light..
