Weekly challenge #510 post card
Posted By: gump, 10-03-2020, 07:57 AM

Welcome to Weekly Challenge #511

I dare say that we all have many photos that are very good or even outstanding that on looking with a self-critical eye have fallen into the category of "it could be a postcard." So, post a postcard (is that redundant?). If you want to add text as if it was a postcard, feel free, but it will not enter into the judging. The winner will be the one that has me saying "I wish I had taken that one." (Yeah, that is weaselly)

ENDS MIDNIGHT OCT 11

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

The Challenge will run until midnight next Thursday, October 1st, whichever time zone you are in.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

This is a picture of a local mountain that I've wanted to climb for many years, and finally made it happen this fall. I got an amazing (for a cellphone) morning picture of the mountain reflected in the lake on the hike, and it inspired me to go back 2 weeks later specifically to take this picture. I used a new to me K3 that came in the mail from a forum member here, 2 days before I took this picture. I also shot 2 rolls of 120 and a a roll of 35mm film that day, but haven't got the scans back from the lab. To get this picture I was out the door before 4 am, on the trail and hiking by 5:45, got to the lake about 8:15 and waited for the light to be just right. No point not enjoying a beautiful day in nature, so we climbed part way up the boulder field at the base of the mountain and ate our lunch, before hiking out. It ended up being about a 14 hour day, with 11 or 12 miles of hiking, and well worth it. This shot is going on my wall, probably as a 40 or 48" canvas print.

I trust those of you who have been responsible for this or other contests have shared the uncertainty of how the subject would be received. I am grateful that you found this interesting and submitted. Then there is judging. The caption contest is relatively easy, just count the "LIKES." In this case, my gratitude is tempered by how difficult you have made the judging. The entries were appropriate to the theme and would catch the eye on a souvenir shop's display. I have been to some of the locations, Devil's Tower, the USAF Museum, and Niagara Falls (the bride/s other disappointment), and the photos are very representative. Vaskebjorn's B&W took me back many decades to when a simple image was common on cards. A special mention to Tom for the work of doing a finished card.

I am choosing Restlesssoul as the winner. Aside from just "I liked the shot," the combination of commercial and natural worked well in the theme. Framing the Volcano with the portal also added to it being "eye catching."

Congratulation to restlesssoul. Very much post card worthy. Thanks for hosting gump. I'm glad I didn't have to judge this one, as there were many superb entries.

Congratulation to restlesssoul, and to echo Tim, I'm glad I didn't have to judge, so very fine entries, well done Gump! And thanks for the mention of my overboard post card, I had fun doing that, my few Photoshop skills are quite rusty.

I just sent a second message to restlesssoul to post or contact me. If I do not get a reply this weekend I will choose a different victim.

Congratulations! Just noticed that the thread title is wrong, we skipped a challenge, this was supposed to be #511 I think.

Please refer to comments on page 1 where, based on Noel's sharp eye," problems were noted and apologies offered. If anyone meets restlesssoul please encourage him/her to post the next challenge or contact me.

Have you sent him a Private Message? If yes and he still doesn't respond, then you may need to pick a 2nd place finisher to take his place.

I have sent two. Unfortunately there is no link to email. I will go with an alternative on sunday if no answer. Perhaps a time limit needs to be added to the general rules?

I say don't wait. It will take the runner-up a day or so to get the next one posted.

OK Tim, now that I have you to blame I will chose another and after looking again it is just as difficult. It has also become clear that the international aspect of this and other contests makes it even more difficult as Niagara Falls, a lighthouse, and Devil's Tower are so "postcardy" to American eyes that I might have an ethnocentric leaning. I will post again within the next hour.

I have chosen Noelcmn as the alternative winner of challenge #511 and have asked him to do #512. His entry did shout "come to Africa" at least it did to my wife.
