Weekly Challenge #526 - Transportation in B/W

Challenge #525- Flowers in B&W produced such an impressive set of small subjects in a classic B&W mode I'd like to stay with that mode but open the subject matter to much larger subjects in their recognizable environments and in a broader category and see where that leads.

I propose all types of transportation -- land, sea and air -- in B&W with emphasis on framing, composition and technique that reflects the age and the environment of the subject. I.e., a horse-drawn carriage or wagon in the rural or urban setting in which it's at 'work'. An auto, aircraft, boat, bicycle in its present condition. Something that says "That's where that vehicle belongs" and in B&W as well.

The challenge closes on Saturday, March 6th.

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Sunshine on the local promenade brings out the skaters, which in turn brings out some joy as I appreciate seeing people make the most of the urban environment.

A Brooklands Riley 9 sitting in the paddock at my local race circuit, Mallory Park. I took the opportunity to get this shot whilst it was parked on its own without any modern reference points, and thought the BW conversion evoked the era of the car.

First, thanks to all y'all who participated.

My thought was to parallel the idea of the previous flower theme, a single, dominant element, dependent upon the B&W (colorless) presentation to highlight the subject in time and place. IMO, it succeeded quite well. (First five were my examples.)

Transportation: a mechanical means of moving people and/or things from one place to another.

Yes, glinda, your wheelbarrow most definitely “counts” after I re-calibrated my original intent. It also kick-started my thinking to appreciate 'SpecialK' and 'Cedrus' skateboards and to look deeper into the 'appropriate setting' of all images. Fun counts too, eh?

For instance, I was somewhat puzzled over 'atupdate's' lonely B-25 until I looked at the minimalist presentation and open bomb bay doors. (A coupla flack bursts in the background would have added the perfect touch.)

The sepia tone of 'kerrowdown's' and 'StephanH's' were the appropriate special touch that images set their images off quite nicely. Both very nicely PP-ed too.

'Vaskebjorn' and 'Bruce's' shots sent me to Bogie and Bacall movies of more than half a century ago. 'Transported' my mind as it were.

What better venue than the latest auto show for 'ramsey's' super-slick Lexus.

'djb47's' kyack couldn't have been better placed and doesn't need the distraction of color.

'Hattifnant's' shot wouldn't have been the same without the manila line that says 'work' not play.

'gump's' steam locomotive lives in the past in B&W.

'jchorst's' dramatic, visual lines and symmetry would have been lost in color.

'jacamar' that shot tells the whole story, including that disgusted look.

'aaacb' I almost missed that flat tire,it makes the shot a 'story'.

'noelcmn' certainly captured all the elements of modern air transportation and gave us a sky to enjoy too.

'crossed-up's' was the only one in which I really wanted a little color - a bright red Ferrari in the background would have set that Riley 9 off nicely.

OK, 'glinda' you've got it. I wanna see where you take us next in your wheelbarrow.

[For those that enjoy messin' around in B&W NIC's Silver Efex software is a handy tool.]

Thanks for the feedback Pacerr, seeing SpecialK cruising boarder initially inspired me to look in that direction and has given me the chance to produce some of my favourite shots yet.

Congrats Glinda, the wheelbarrow was outside the box and is an atmospheric shot.

Congrats to all, these competitions are great fun and the standards of shots inspire.
