WEEKLY CHALLENGE #537 Roads less taken June 11-18.
Posted By: gump, 06-11-2021, 08:36 AM

Hattifnatt is busy so Mr. Hampshire asked me to host #537. I may be assuming too much but probably everyone has taken a "road" photo. So simply post a road, street, alley, path, trail, or something else that fits the pattern. As with the couple of other challenges I have judged, I don't have a detail eye at least not at first. The contenders will be photos that grab my attention and who knows what sort of mood I will have that day. I will decide on the morning of June 19th. If I have done accurate arithmetic that may be at or about 10 am (GMT or GDT or whatever.)

Weekly Challenge

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week. This challenge is Pentax-only.

Everyone is eligible to send in their best interpretation of the given theme, as long as the photo is taken with a Pentax/Samsung camera. Themes can be subject-oriented or technique-oriented.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be t

Depending on your beliefs this may be the road most travelled...and no judgement passed by me! Myself and a friend decided to attempt to photograph the near-to-him Mormon Temple one night, as the building is a spectacular stone and gold structure well lit. However it is not the easiest place to get into and photograph undisturbed...as we found out when the security and religious follower Paul came to speak with us! I'm particularly happy with the atmosphere this shot captured of the grounds paths.

Shot of Paul available upon request for interested parties

Despite appearances, the entire state of Kansas, USA isn't absolutely flat; nor is it the end of the known world.
No, really. Well, some of it isn't anyway.

OBTW, what color's the sky in your world?

I found out that I have a lot of road photos, but I'll go with this one going through Holly Shelter swamp from January. I like the mackerel sky, seems to accentuate the loneliness.

Results for #537

Of course all the entries are worthy and my thanks. Particular mention to cedrusmacro, Fdooch, and Vaskeborn for looking outside the usual road to the horizon, leading line, what's just around the corner/over the hill. Honorable mention to noelcmn for an image I found intriguing as the people became an integral part of the road story. Also, a mention to pacerr, ramseybuckeye, atupdate, and Stephen Hampshire for shots that were alive due to my personal experience.

I chose the photo by Rod_Grant. I find a lot of minimalist stuff does not work for me. This one does. I found the arrangement of space and the colors, sorry colours, I don't speak Australian, all worked into the whole. I, like many Americans I believe, think of Australia as this "openness" pictured here. I might point out the black object in the foreground road or the pointy thing on the right side of the road as distractions, but i won't,

Whoa! Thanks gump (Andy) for a surprise pick. There were some great entries here and I am a bit chuffed to be picked.
The cousin's sheep station, 13,000 acres, is about ten miles from the nearest bitumen road. This road isn't always as well graded as when I took that photo!
I will put up a new contest tomorrow.

That picture did trigger some nice memories.

When I was 6 years old in 1955, I went with my parents (in a '54 Austin sedan) to St. Louis, Missouri to visit some relatives who had recently moved from Canada to that city. As we traveled , I was watching the scenery go by, and still remember some sights I saw. We were in the state of Kansas , and I recall going down roads exactly like this...so many years ago.

I'm somewhat amazed I recall memories from this trip, so long ago and particularly when I was so young, but there you have it.

I note that you have a Pentax H1a. I still have my Pentax S1a, my first 'good' camera, which I purchased new (probably new old stock) in February of 1969, along with a Sekonic light meter. Both S1a and Sekonic meter still work .
