Weekly Challenge #542 - Trees and deadwood
Posted By: jacamar, 07-29-2021, 09:37 AM

Thanks to Gump for initiating and judging the previous challenge, and for choosing my shot so that I get to set and judge the next one.
Trees help define the character of a place, they reflect the seasons, and they record the passage of time during their life cycles. The scope is wide here - woodlands, individual trees, shrubs and woody vines, driftwood and their landscape contexts are all just fine.
I'll leave the format of the challenge, discussed in the previous thread, as it is for now and allow for a bit more discussion of that - you may wish to add your own suggestions with your entries.

Here are the (usual!) rules, plus I have added Ricoh cameras just to make that clear (My GR-III is a great tree camera!).

1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax, Ricoh or Samsung DSLR camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Read more at: About the weekly challenges -

Contest runs through to early evening (EST) of August 5.

Here are a few examples from my collection:

I look forward to your own interpretations.

I like this one from February, unless I get a better one this weekend, probably not much chance to shoot trees this weekend though.

I changed out my photo for this one I took in a nature reserve. This was basically the only “big” tree standing there as it is something inbetween grassland and wetlands. There are “wild horses” and “wild cattle” in that area. Oh and som kind of deer.
The tree fell over in the meantime and was chopped up.

Here's one I recently posted elsewhere on the forum, talking about how outdoor photography can be unpredictable. I had set out in the morning hoping to get a really wide panorama of the river valley below me full of fog above the river as it sometimes is on cool mornings. But when I got to the top of the small mountain behind my house, it was socked right in. Just gray and poor visibility, no light shining from the sky, but also not at all dramatic. So I ended up with about 4 or 5 shots of various trees, and with the very plain and boring sky as background, along with not much colour anyways, I thought they might make decent black and white photos. Here's one of my favourites from that morning.

Taken with my K3 and SMC A50 F1.7.

I had considered posting a picture of Deadwood, South Dakota, but noticed that the current theme starts with trees, so here is a picture of a very dead tree, in spite of everything.

Probably my favorite tree shot - somewhere near Castlebar at sunset.

I can see why it would be a favourite. When I first mis-read the location though, I was surprised. There's a small town called Castlegar near where I live in Canada, and your photo doesn't look like the right kind of trees or terrain to be from around there.
