P 52-10-1 Subject: Bokeh
Posted By: djb47, 09-09-2021, 11:36 AM

Project 52 continues with P52-10-1 beginning tomorrow. For this challenge I'll judge and announce the winner next Thur. The winner will then get to judge and announce the winner of the P52-10-2 challenge. If you have a theme or technique you would like to see in the Project please let me know. I'll try and have themes posted a month or two in advance so you can see what will be coming in the weeks ahead. Thanks, Don

The bokeh effect is produced when the foreground and/or background is intentionally blurred around a subject. Bokeh, meaning "blur" in Japanese, can be achieved by using adjusting a camera's aperture for a shallow depth of field. The bokeh effect is an aesthetic choice and tends to give images a dreamlike appearance.

As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.

Photos for P52-10-1 are to be taken and posted between Sep 10 and Sep 16.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-10 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture or how it represents the weekly theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non
Pentax cameras are allowed. Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot,
Medium Format, et cetera. But no phones, please.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.

Thanks for hosting Don! I went out and shot this for the challenge. Maybe not the most interesting photo, but it illustrates the bokeh. KP and Tamron macro 90 at F2.8, focus on an azalea stamen tip. I like this one better, KP, DA 1.4 converter and DA*300.

I read about this challenge yesterday and liked the idea. So I decided to take a picture for it. I wanted to try a portrait picture with a bokeh as a background for a long time and the topick motivated me to do it.
Taken with K3III and HD FA77 ltd.

Welcome aboard Yaki.

Went out with the K100D and Tamron 28-105mm this morning. Had not used this lens in a long time. I was surprised at the bokeh it produced.

I used to own that lens, very good and underrated lens in the right hands, and I see yours is.

Thanks Tom. I need to use this $28 lens more often.

Some flowering sagebrush from Friday. I hadn't even read about this when I took it. I was on top of a mountain, and figured if I used a telephoto lens I could really isolate the sagebrush and make it pop. This was taken with my K3 and Tamron 500 mm 55B mirror lens, handheld(1/2000 s, ISO 1000). It took a lot of trys to get proper focus and framing, but I like what I was able to get. The background of the shot is the evergreen forest of pine and fir trees below, and it's far enough away that the typical donut bokeh from a mirror lens doesn't show up. I do really like this lens for its portability though, and it comes with me nearly everywhere.

Closeups of nature seem to be the sub-theme here; my second (or third) hand A50 f1.4 cost me more than $28, but much less than the Tamron 90 Macro that I bought new (which is my favourite lens for backyard closeups). Manual focus wide open requires a steady hand and not a little bit of luck; what makes the bokeh interesting with the A50 at f1.4 is the glow around high contrast, slightly out of focus areas. That glow goes away at f2. This lens is also prone to chromatic aberrations (mainly purple fringing), but at 100% magnification I couldn't find any fringing in this photo (the stalks and leaves of this succulent have natural tinges of purple).

Taken with my KS-1 and a little Industar 50 2. This is looking like it'll be similar for creating a smooth smudge of bokeh like my 135 Tamron twin tele. I've got to experiment more, but this evening primrose flower and pampas proved a nice tester following a service I gave it. I aimed to test the sharpness of the centre to make sure focusing was correctly set, and shot it (I think) at f.4.

I saw this flower in the sunlight on my back porch and immediately thought it would pop and that the back yard would supply some interesting bokeh. I tried another lens (Sears 80-200 f4 macro) but it was too soft - which could be partly the wind and lighting making it hard to nail the image. To me this bokeh is interesting and provides a nice background element to the flower. I just wish I had less windy conditions and more time to experiment.

Edit: I have removed the other shot in favor of this. DFA 100 WR on Sony A7riii. Kipon adapter. Shot from a Nest carbon fiber tripod.

Personally UncleVanya, this second one has the greater variation in bokeh and a nicer subject frame to me.
