Project 52-10-3: Smoke
Posted By: djb47, 09-24-2021, 04:27 AM

This week's project is smoke photography. Smoke is a malleable and exciting object to work with. It looks cryptic, mystical and a bit creepy. Creating abstracts or still life with smoke photography is an easy way to set up a mysterious and enigmatic atmosphere in your image. There are plenty of references on the Internet if you need tips or how-tos. As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.

Photos for P52-10-3 are to be taken and posted between Sep 24 and Sep 30.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-10 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture or how it represents the weekly theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non
Pentax cameras are allowed. Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot,
Medium Format, etc. But no phones, please.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.

Elmo out in a smoke shower. Not quite what I had wanted. If I get a chance I'll redo this.

Late to join in here but didn't want your Elmo feeling lonely Don.

Attempted to capture a smokey wisp but didn't quite get it right. Like spirits dancing.

Good try Cedrus. Smoke is wispy at times. Elmo was feeling lonely.

I'll keep this Project open for another week in hopes we get a few more smokey images.

Project is extended and open until Oct 7, 2021. Show us some smoke.

Thanks Don, I find it's a difficult effect to set up artificially and finding the right settings- I had a plan for that shot, but couldn't get the lighting and smoke to play ball.

Very nice Noel! The perfect spiral in the left wisp does it for me.

I applaud all of you that attempted this, I did not get the chance, time has been in short supply the last couple of weeks. I just returned from a 12 hour drive so this will be short, sorry for not going into a more in depth critique. I am christening Noel as the winner, I agree with CedrusMacro that the spiral did it for me. Nice job on all!

Cheers Tom, life has a habit of getting in the way of fun- just good to get closure and a justified winner. Well done Noel, that spiral from the log held mystery, a goal I had with the smoke.
