Weekly challenge #561 - Winter
Posted By: turbo_bird, 11-21-2021, 05:11 PM

Thanks again Yaki for last week's challenge of low key photos, and thanks for choosing my photo. Seeing how where I live we just got our first snowfall a couple days ago, let's see some photos of winter. Winter is one of my favourite times of year for photography, as there's so much variety in weather and lighting conditions, and everything looks so different covered in snow. Another bonus is that the sun is fairly low in the sky all day long, so I don't have to get up early for sunrise. I know not everyone in the world gets snow, but most of us get some type of winter season, so that's up for interpretation as well.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

And just because I can, here's a few samples.

Have fun everyone!

My wife feels that winter starts the first time it snows, or gets really cold, or worst-case the weekend after Thanksgiving. One might argue that as of today we still have an entire month of autumn, but that person probably isn't married.

That's funny, I don't pay much attention to what the calendar says is the change of seasons, just what the weather tells me. My wife though, reminds me all the time that it's not winter until Dec. 21 or whatever the calendar says. I figured that's just the difference between me growing up on a farm and her growing up in town.

We stopped having decent winters some time ago. Occasionally the canal freezes over and we get some snow sometimes.
This gull that wanted to take a bath might disagree at the time of the photo though. This freezing weather lasted a couple of days.

I suppose I get my calendar-based perspective from my fascination with astronomy (too many hobbies). I'll concede that for the purposes of photography winter = cold.

Down south of the Equator, our Winters are mild compared to the northern hemisphere. In Johannesburg, we occasionally get below freeing point in winter, though some years it can go down to -14°C. Mostly we suffer some frost and icicles. Such as this.

Winter is a funny time when you live near the UK west coast, especially a seaside resort town. It's rare we ever see snow, certainly as the wonderful range of images above represent! Christmas lights and the archetypal tree is the imagery that helps signify Winter arriving here.

So I offer you all this piece of current, typically fake dazzle from a one-time wannabe Vegas clone. As glitzy a star atop a tree as you could hope.

Turn of the season

Winter's not really arrived in the south of England but it's certianly colder this week, most days the frost has gone by the time I take a coffee break from work and see what's happening in my garden.
This was shot with the XR Rikenon 35mm 2.8 @ 5.6
