Project 52-10-12: Refraction
Posted By: djb47, 11-26-2021, 06:05 AM

Refraction occurs when light passes from one medium and into another which affects the speed and direction of the light. When light passes through a prism, and the white light splits into the colors of the rainbow that is refraction! Refraction happens around us wherever the light shines. You can get refraction through transparent objects that are plastic but the best refraction will come from glass.

Photos for P52-10-12 are to be taken and posted between Nov 26 and Dec 2.

Rules:
1.Anyone and everyone who is interested is eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-10 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture or how it represents the weekly theme.
4.Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non
Pentax cameras are allowed. Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot,
Medium Format, etc. But no phones, please.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7.The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.

Your typical refraction shot. I'll try for something different in the next few days if time permits but for now this answers the mail.

I like this one better.

You have time. I'm on EST.

The challenge is open until I close it tomorrow morning when I log on. So if you post between now and then you are good to go.

Ok, so this isn't my most inspired photo. It's been a busy week over here with the holiday and multiple other unexpected time commitments. I was fully committed to sitting down tonight and relaxing with some music instead of setting up a photo. But when I grabbed a CD I saw refractions - a clear sign of what I was destined to do. And since it's still 12/2 in SEVERAL time zones across the world, here I am.

Bonus points for figuring out what I'm listening to.

You made it in time Will. Don't relax too much you are the judge for the water splash project.

This project is now closed and ready for judging.

Hi all, I'll be looking to get judging this shortly- will be within 24 hours at latest

They've been challenging themes recently which I suspect lowers the participants, especially at this time of year.

Good afternoon all! Apologies for the delay...seems Noel has snuck an extra entry in (I hope all are happy with me accepting it- more entries are good!).

And without further ado...into the feedback!

Yaki:I like the reflected shape in the prisms to match the shape of the glass. The framing is somewhat distracting, particularly the top of the frame- perhaps a wider angle could have helped.

Don: This image is nicely framed showing a clear refracted image of the tree in all it's festive glory. Pleasing bokeh as well enhances the effect.

Will: Nice attempt with a clear refraction courtesy of the CD layer. Exposure and perhaps angle tilts under lighting could have created enhanced light rays.

Noel: There is something very 'digital' about the bubble render and is a creative interpretation
The oil slick colours in the bubble are the highlight and I wonder how training the focal point on this would have enhanced the refraction.

Cedrus: what more could be said...clear winner 🏆...except as judge this is clear corruption and as such is disqualified. Terrible behaviour Cedrus.

Overall I'm giving the pick this week to Noel with a very late but creative entry. It was a close call with Don's as that was keeping the festive spirit going.

Looking forward to the next project entries all!

Good job judging Cedrus. You are correct -- more is good.

Well done and congratulations Noel.
