Project 52-10-26: HIgh Key
Posted By: djb47, 03-04-2022, 06:28 AM

High key photography uses unnaturally bright lighting to blow out most or all harsh shadows in an image. High key images usually convey a positive or upbeat tone. Just because a photo is bright to achieve the “light and airy” look, doesn’t mean that it’s a high key image. It might just be an overexposed image. High key photographs have minimal tonal range. they lack deep contrast caused by harsh shadows, and the overall color palette is light.

Photos for P52-10-26 are to be taken and posted between Mar 4 and Mar 10.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested is eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-10 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture or how it represents the weekly theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non
Pentax cameras are allowed. Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot,
Medium Format, etc. But no phones, please.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.

I actually had to look up what High Key photography was and after seeing some landscapes in that style immediately thought of shooting some snowy landscapes which are still plentiful around me. I actually inadvertently have done a few in the past without knowing what that style was but was going for that bright feel.

I think product or family type subjects would be easier and better suited to high key photos. But then I'm not an intentional high keyer. :-))

Looking forward to your high key landscapes.

That was just a though. I do plan on playing with the concept. I saw some landscape shots but the vast majority were product or portrait type shots. So I will probably do a bunch and pick what turned out the best.

I have done very few shots like that. I like them for subject isolation but I need to try more subjects.

My solution to this was just to look it up and look at a bunch of shots. My takeaway from that was that they are very much exposed to the right (either during capture or done with post processing) and that generally they have a light airy feel or an ephemeral feel.

I actually went and spent a couple hours today trying this shooting style out. In doing this I believe I found a shot to enter in the wide open spaces contest as well but that won't be my entry here unless there is a big desire to see it.

Liking those fork shots aren't we. Did you just stab it through a piece of paper?

Looks like I'm the judge for this challenge.
Thank you for the resources. I've explored a couple of other sites but the information is the same. I've shot limited high key and found it is challenging. However, when all the elements come together, the results are beautiful.

What ever works. I try to see if I can figure out a shot as it is a good exercise in learning.
