Weekly Challenge #594 - Break the rules
Posted By: hcarvalhoalves, 11-06-2022, 09:03 PM

Time to break the rules: show your creativity with unconventional composition, crops and/or aspect ratios!

Some ideas:

- Breaking the rule-of-thirds
- Landscapes in square or vertical aspect ratio
- Portraits in square or 16:9 ("cinematic") aspect ratio
- Landscapes w/ tele
- Portraits w/ wide angle or lots of headroom

Any subject and style of photography goes, as long it's out of the ordinary in terms of composition.

My examples:

The fine print:

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

This challenge will run until midnight, November 13th 2022.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

The previous challenge was Weekly Challenge #593 - Clouds

I actually shoot a bit more of 16:9 or rather 3840:2160 these days. This is caused by the fact that I got really disappointed with the prints I was getting from my printshop. So I decided to go the digital route and got myself a Samsung the frame. I sold it as a gift to myself obviously. The screenformat is as you guessed 3840:2160 and I can now change the “prints” as often as I want. The attached one is my current one. As this is a macro I hope this qualifies as “breaking the rules”

This picture breaks almost every rule of composition Most of them intentionally. This way it reveals the vivid chaos and the condenced power of a small club Rock concert.

p.s. by the way - Break the rules - sound pretty good as a rock concert title.

Vertical landscape, centered, mid day harsh light.

Thanks,

Totally Unbalanced

It's the most awkward composition I could reasonably find quickly... but "wot a belter".

I took this one last night, not because of this challenge, but I actually liked it this way, vertical landscape, the sun is nearly in the middle of the frame, and it was shot at 420mm, DA*300 and DA1.4 TC. I don't know why, but if I have this combo with me when shooting sunrise or sunset, I got to take a few at 420mm.

Thanks for those few kind words... but you gotta admit it doesn't comply with the accepted composition conventions.

Maybe that's what appealed to my inner "out of the box" desires when taking it.

My entry. This is from this past weekend. A cigar plant with the DA 10-17. Breaks the rule of "don't hold the camera like a drunk" as well as maybe not so much a rule as a tradition of not using ultra wide angles for closeups. Also has a fairly distracting background. I thought it all came together to make a pretty cool and unique photo though.
