Weekly Challenge #600 - Shadow as subject
Posted By: Fdooch, 01-06-2023, 05:26 AM

Hello everyone My topic this week is "Shadow as a subject."
This means when the shadow is significant for the telling of your story or the absence of a shadow is impossible for the composition.

The fine print:

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

This challenge will run until January 14, 2023. It closes at 24.00h, whatever time zone you're

Rules:
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Example: The picture shows the monument "Worker and collective farmer". It was made for the international exhibition in Paris in 1937. After the end of the exhibition, it was transported to Moscow. I photographed it right after the 6-year restoration and the shadow from the spotlights lay on the low clouds.

Interesting subject for the challenge, I can’t remember if we had something similar before. After the first photo was judged as being slightly out of specs i went to my archives and was torn between two photo. One being a high contrast photo giving the shadows and the one I finally chose as in this one the shadows are the subject. So I hope this one is inside the specs .

You would think so, but I chose another one for that challenge. That said, i will browse my archive and see if I can come up with an alternative.

Interesting photo. But somewhat off topic. It is more suitable for the project 52 negative space.

As "shadows" is one of my favourite subjects, I'll jump in. I like this picture because it shows the shadow independently, without the subject creating it. This approach shows that the shadows can "live their own life" - be separated from the subjects.

I'm in with this Christmas angel and its shadow. The strong clear shadow made by midday sunlight almost forced me to take this picture. The symbolic content of angel's shadow offers much to think about. At least for me.

Wow this shadow seams to has its own personality different from this of the driftwood. It looks like a shadow of a woman leaning on her right hand. Or a mermaid perhaps
If so she could easily decide to stay when the wood drifts away
anyway - I like it

How about shadow as a self-portrait?

I would like to ask you for help.
Since English is not my native language and I use a translator, I can make mistakes. I try to double-check, but I remain at a loss.
I ask you not to take my words to heart, but some inconsistency prompted me to this idea.
Very often I see works in the monthly competition that, in my opinion, do not correspond to the stated topic.
There is also some misunderstanding here.
What is it - my poor English or lack of critical thinking?
I don't want to be a pedant and if you say, learn English, I'll calm down.

Hi Fdooch.
Your English is much better than my Russian!!! (which is non-existent)
Yes there are a few images where the subject that is making the shadow is visible, and even dominant, and that is not how I interpret your title of "Shadow as a subject."
Other people may interpret differently, but there is nothing wrong with your English (at least in that case - since it is all the evidence that I have!!)
I don't think I have an image that fits the bill; but I will keep looking.

See, I interpret "shadow is significant" as the shadow is the subject but the object making the shadow can be included. Sometimes the shadow is what makes the image interesting.
