Thanks again to atupdate for hosting the most recent challenge and for his helpful comments on the successful entries. As the winner, I get to choose the theme for the next challenge.
The theme is “expressing the passage of time through photography”. Most photos reflect only a moment in time, and yet there are ways for them to reflect elapsed time in a visual way.
The most direct way is simply to photograph something that is old. This is a “Typex” machine, used for decoding secret radio messages during the Second World War. Apart from looking old, I think the machine causes us to reflect on the time taken by thousands of people (mostly women) to do this work and the big gap between this device and today’s computers.
Time and motion are connected, and a time lapse photo can often express both in the same image:
We can also use visual elements that reflect time. The top pine needles on this rock face are not as faded as the older ones on the bottom.
There are many other ways to do this. I look forward to your interpretations, and your comments on how your images reflect the theme.
This challenge will close on March 1 2023 at the same time as this posting.
The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.
Rules:
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax or Ricoh camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.
