PROJECT 52-11-26-CAMERA AND LENS CONTROL- Zoom zoom
Posted By: noelcmn, 03-06-2023, 04:50 AM

Welcome to the 11th Edition of Project 52, which I will be hosting for the year. Thanks to djb47 for hosting Project 52-10.
Let's get some Motivation
I have participated in a few Project 52 kind of thing and there are plenty out there. One of the many aspects that have come to the fore is the value of participating, one of them being how much you learn-about technique, out of the box thinking, getting to know your camera's potential and a host of other values. WHY NOT JOIN THE PROJECT! Besides some discipline, there is not much else required except if you are chosen the winner, in which case you judge the next weeks challenge.

Themes covered will include but not limited to:
Colour
Architecture
DOF
Focus
Exposure
Landscape
Lighting
Perspective
Shutter
Subject- Multi-subject challenge
People
Ideas
Shapes
Home
Animals
Seasonal
Leisure

Rules
1. Anyone and everyone interested in the challenge is eligible. The goal continues to be to have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques
with fellow Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore. The theme/sub-concepts are chosen by the facilitator every week. You are only
required to submit a photo taken during the week of the challenge.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-11 thread for the week. Explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non Pentax cameras are allowed. Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot,
Medium Format, et cetera. And we will include images taken with phones as well.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is active to be eligible for judging. It is up to the discretion of the current week's
Judge to accept or decline early/late entries i.e. a day earlier or a day late. Usually there is some flexibility here to allow as many entrants as possible. BUT
PLEASE DO NOT POST IMAGES TAKEN DAYS OR WEEKS OUTSIDE THE PERIOD OF THE CHALLENGE. TRY TO KEEP IT AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE
TO THE TIME FRAME. SOME FLEXIBILITY IS ALLOWED (after all life comes before photography) FOR OUT OF DATE/LATE SUBMISSIONS.
8. Additional images are welcome, but please keep them to a minimum. If more than one image is posted, make sure you identify your entry for the challenge.
Additional images should also please comply with rule 1 and rule 7.
9. Any picture taken from thread start date
By default, attached photos will be shown below your message
Click on the button below to upload
to listed closing date is acceptable.
10. The WINNER of each weekly challenge is the JUDGE of the next weeks Project 52-11 and may not participate in the challenge.
11. The host/facilitator (in this case noelcmn) may participate in the challenge, provided he/she is not the judge.

We are still with Camera and Lens control, and this week we go zooming. A wide range of Zoom Focal lengths provide almost limitless possibilities for the photographer. Some Zoom lenses have a Macro facility, (therefore Macro images will be accepted for this challenge) and others have super long focal lenghts for wildlife enthusiasts. For the purposes of this weeks challenge, Zoom Lens will cover the distance of 80mm (shortest focul length) to whatever the longest focal length you have in your collection.

THE CHALLENGE WILL CLOSE AT MIDNIGHT ON THE 12TH MARCH IN YOUR TIME ZONE

DA 55-300PLM at 98mm, F9, ISO 100, 1/30. When I took this last night I had two zooms, the DA55-300, DA20-40, and two primes DA15, DA*300 with me. I chose the 55-300 for this shot because I wanted the moon to show up prominently and also anchor the sky to the ground with an interesting feature, while showing the Atlantic Ocean in the background. The 300 would be too long, the 15 would show the moon as a tiny speck, and the 20-40 would also be too short for what I had in mind. I could have probably went 20mm in either direction and had a suitable composition, but this is what I chose.

Great landscape Tom!
Again I used the same hardware and it was not intended. I choose the 55-300 PLM for the fast continuous focus ability to catch a bird and the sky. Today finally some blue appeared on the sky and I didn't want to miss it.

Pulled out the Tamron 70-300 Macro for the first time in years for this challenge. Not my favorite lens, heavy and bulky for my taste, but it does have the reach to catch small birds in our back yard. Took a few more snaps and put together this triptych along with the bluebird image.

OOps I'm late to the party, and hope our Judge will accept this. The grey matter is not functioning well these days. Same lens as djb47- the Tamron 70-300mm Macro

Better late than never. You're in, but now the challenge is closed. I will commence the judging activities when I get my act together... 🙄

Despite zoom lenses being most popular and coming in a wide ranges of sizes and focal lengths, I found it interesting that all four of you chose lenses of about the same caliber.

Tom, I like your landscape, and your explanation on how you took the shot and why was very informative. A great lesson on how and why to shoot landscapes with telephoto lenses, and what to look for in composition. Well done!

Yaki, your cloudscape/landscape is visually striking and the blues are very colorful here. I had to pixel peep to find your bird, though.

Don, great idea for a triptych. I like the images, but I wish I could view them in a larger format.

Noel, I imagine clearly that I could walk up to that ear, stick my hand in there, and pull out a wad of earwax.

Nicely done everyone, but this week the golden trophy goes to Tom for his seaside landscape. Onward to next week!
