615 - Wilderness
Posted By: turbo_bird, 05-24-2023, 08:38 PM

Thanks to Yaki for hosting Challenge # 614 and choosing my photo as a winner. I think this week's theme will be wilderness. A walk in the woods always seems to make things better for me, no matter what else might be going on around me. By some planning and a bit of luck I live in an area that lets me do that fairly regularly, so that's where I take a lot of my photos. Let's see some of yours as well, I know I've seen plenty of great wilderness photos posted on the site in the past. Whether a grand vista or a macro, there's plenty to photograph in the wilderness. Here's a few of mine that I like.

This challenge will end on Monday, May 29, midnight UTC.

Rules:
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax or Ricoh camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

If “everyone” is going big, I will go the opposite direction being tiny. I got this Tiger Crane Fly on a leaf in one of my daily “walks”. I had not seen one of these ever before so I obviously took a very reasonable amount of photos of it .

I guess I will go in between big and small. Eastern Garter snake that was along the side of a trail near my old house. I think the area just barely qualifies as wilderness.

Boch Hollow is actually very close to a road but invisible to most who go by. It is totally unmarked, but it is located in a State Natur Preserve. You have to apply for a permit to go there, if approved they send direction with the permit and tell you where to park. It is located in Ohio’s beautiful Hocking Hills region.

I grew up about 30 miles from the end of civilization in west-central Alberta; I remember taking an old motorbike down lease roads (more like trails) and encountering bears and elk. That's not what I'm posting a picture of; if I got dropped in the middle of the boreal forest or even an inaccessible valley in the mountains, I could survive for several days. I took a guided tour to the Tusipono Embera village in the Panamanian jungle 10 years ago; even though the place where we boarded the dugout canoes is only about an hour from the skyscrapers of Panama City, if I got left behind on the Chagres River, I'd be lucky to survive until nightfall.
