Weekly Challenge #627 - The Decisive Moment
Posted By: Kerrowdown, 09-20-2023, 02:16 PM

Many thanks to jacamar for hosting a most interesting last weeks challenge. Unfortunately carlwood is unable to host this weeks challenge, so it falls to me as runner up to set this week.

My chosen Challenge is based on a phrase made famous in photography circles by the great Henri Cartier-Bresson.

The Decisive Moment... so show me your work, where the sense of timing really makes the image sing.

Whilst I can't rule out the "spray & pray" technique of image capture. I would like to suggest that we all play fairly and demonstrate what can be achieved by activating the shutter at "The Decisive Moment".

This challenge will close at 20:00 GMT 29th September 2023 (the extra few days here... will get us back in step for a weekly slot).

Rules:
1. Post ONE photo only.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax or Ricoh camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Here are a few examples:

I had electronic help with this decisive moment (a lightning trigger) - let me know if that disqualifies it, I can choose another

I'll jump in with one of my first pictures taken with a Pentax camera (K-5). I was walking down the streets of Vienna and just tried to photograph a movie poster through the glass showcase. While I was pressing the shutter, a cinema employee lifted the showcase and somehow the buildings behind me reflected on the glass. I liked the result, kinda looks like Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are taking a stroll in Vienna.

The poster is this one I think:

This was not so much "spray and pray" as "a short burst when things looked good". An Arctic Fox, taken from a second row seat in a van over the driver's shoulder.

One summerday I tried photographing a bee with my K3-3 and the Iris 150mm which in itself is challenging enough as the bee does normally not want to sit still and the Iris is manual focus when a beewolf grabbed the bee as lunch for the day. The whole scene took about 2-3 seconds and I was lucky enough to get it. It was not something I had seen before.

I love the moment hunting in photography. And sometimes I use continuous mode with a two to five pictures series when I expect something interesting in advance. I admit it. But for this challenge I choose a picture where this strategy doesn't work. The moment when the smoke hides almost everything on the stage but leaves a small area of clear view and a second latter everything is blurred.

My Pentax K3 III is relay great camera for catching the moment with its big and bright pentaprism, fast and precise AF and extremly fast shutter response. The last is the main reason for me to choose Pentax as photography system with my first camera (K 500) 9 years ago and I still think this is the right choice for me.

The fish knows the crocdiles are lying in ambush and goes at full speed. If a gape appears in front a quick u-turn is attempted, often too late. K3-III, 150-450 @150mm, f8 1/2000. Taken in Kruger National Park, South Africa
