Best of PF Newsletter Challenge #17: Magic Manual Glass
Posted By: cjfeola, 02-13-2024, 10:13 PM

Our latest and greatest cameras are marvels of modern digital technology. A K-3 III with a PLM lens is razor sharp and focuses at the speed of thought. So why give all that up by mounting some old K or M or A fully manual, no electronics lens on your modern marvel of imaging technology? Because some of that old glass is magic, and absolutely worth the trouble. Please share with us images from your favorite manual lenses, and tell us in the comments what makes them special and worth the trouble.

This challenge runs through February 20.

Oh dear; where would I even begin to start... as all my imagery is achieved in this manner with my harem of "Ladies".

Wow! What an impressive lineup in your sig! You're the only other person I've ever met who also owns the beast: the 135 F1.8. How do you like it on digital? I'm planning on working it out on my Monochrome soon, which currently is sporting my SMC Pentax 50mm F1.2. My all-time fav is the SMC Pentax-M 20mm F4; I haven't tried the 2.8. LOVE my 28 F2.8! I also have and frequently use my A* 300 F4.

What camera are you using for your Ladies? I cannot put down the Monochrome these days; it pushes and challenges me in a way no camera has since I got my first LX...Interestingly, these days I'm scanning Tri-X I shot on my MX and LXs with my K-3 III Monochrome using my M 100mm F4 Macro and Rear Converter A...

With the Soligor 90-230mm f4.5, apparently made by Tokina in 1967.

You'll find that there are others here on the forum, that also own this fine piece of Pentax glass.

My Lady Luck (Pentax-A*135mm F1.8) has the ability to shoot at F1.7, just see your EXIF file for any time you shoot wide open. Like in this example image shown.

Truly absolutely fine to use.

LXs but not so much these days, so exclusively K1s, where the focal length behaves as it always did in film days.

I always enjoy taking my older Pentax K10 out, this time to test it with a beautiful and one of my favourite vintage lenses attached. The S-M-C TAKUMAR 1:1.8/85mm.
Loved the sharpness on the red flower.
As for the yellow one, it was a loner surrounded by grass which made focusing in on it a challenge. However, I do like that the grass allowed me only a small area in near focus.
It is a beautiful lens, and despite having the KP and K1m2, I still enjoy the surprise the K10 gives me every time in colour and quality of images.

Classic glass on the K-3 III Monochrome

Out walking with the Monochrome and some classic glass this week: The SMC 50mm F1.2, and the A* 135 F1.8. First two are with the A* 135; the third is the SMC 50mm.
