Weekly Challenge #85: Cats
Posted By: rpriedhorsky, 01-15-2009, 10:08 PM

This week's topic: Cats. While that's a simple noun, as always, the topic is fully open to interpretation.

Optional: Tell the "making of" story (think Ansel Adams' Examples). While I won't consider it in judging, I find that kind of stuff quite compelling.

Bonus trivia: Cat in the Hat contains only one 3-syllable word (and none with four or more). What is it?

Entries are due Friday, January 23 at noon CST (UTC-6). I'll try to have judging complete Friday night or Saturday morning.

Honored to be your host this week,

Reid

----------------------------------------------
As usual, the rules are as follows...

1. Post ONE photo (max 1000x1000).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be color or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but if you have to explain it, it probably doesn’t communicate what you are trying for.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.

Cat Nap

The only cat picture I have.

DS, DA50-200, ISO 400, f5.6, 1/125 sec (I wanted to shoot fast enough to freeze the action)

Great subject. I am posting this entry on behalf of my wife, who is an avid Pentaxian and follower of this forum, but not very good writing in English so she hasn't officialy entered here.

This es Elliot, our beloved persian... shot by my wife.

That's what they do usually, isn't it? Don't get the impression that cats are very vivid animals here!

I don't have many cat pictures but here is one with a story. We recently
visited my brother and his wife in order to meet their twin babies. They
have a cat, Phoebe. Phoebe is working hard to adjust to the babies,
and then she had to deal with more people in the house, two of
which were my sons (age 5 and 9). Mostly, she hid in my brother's sock
drawer . I was fortunate to catch a picture of her, wanting to visit but
trying to keep her personal space, too.

(hand held, 1/8 sec, ISO800 135mm/f2.8, thank you SR!)

This guy just happened to wander into the frame when I was shooting some industrial decay, so I quickly recomposed and grabbed this shot.

I love reading the Sunday paper

Meet Phoebe better known as Lump or Girlfriend. She hates me but loves my husband. Go figure.

I usually take pictures of Sylvie to test a new lens ("it's not a lens if it can't take a picture of my cat"). LBA means that this has in itself given me as many pictures of her as I really *need*. But sometimes, I see her in a setting or light that moves me to try yet again to snap the Ultimate Cat Portrait. Here's my latest attempt, taken with my K200D and what I think is the Ultimate Cat Portrait Lens, the M100/2.8. She was sitting on top of a new (to us) chair by the front living room window, which also provides the Ultimate Cat Portrait Lighting. Most of my shot of her have been with her staring out the window, but I like the immediacy of this one:

(hopefully the fact that Flickr sizes to 1024 rather than 1000 isn't a problem rules-wise...)

Aaachooo

We don't have a cat since they don't agree with my nose. So here's a big cat from a distance.

Testing out my newly purchased Metz 48 AF-1 I Christmas eve on my nieces cat Daisy aka Diablo. Despite her right ear distracted by a noise at the moment I took the picture she's always curious, friendly and playful. You can literally do anything with her and she doesn't care, I've never seen a cat like her which is awesome. Now to find myself a Silver Tipped Chinchilla Persian.
