Weekly Challenge #87: Cultures
Posted By: RollsUp, 02-01-2009, 01:39 PM

This weeks topic:Cultures.

There are myriads of different cultures on this planet that I (and most of us) will never get to see personally and I'm hoping a lot of participants, at least thru images, will show me/us the different cultures from around the world.

Entries are due Friday evening January 6th AK DST (-9 UTC).

hmmm... interesting topic. Being a white, male, American, currently not traveling anywhere, I'll have to think on that one. Hopefully I'll be able to come up with something......

(3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but if you have to explain it, it probably doesn’t communicate what you are trying for.) <-- Not applicable this round!!!
The "not applicable this round" was added by the last fellow for his particular topic, so I'd suggest you put the rules back to normal for this round.

Also, may I propose a Rule 8 for this challenge series? "8. The photo can be taken this week or any other time." The other weekly challenges seem to require photos to have been taken the week of the challenge only, and the fact that this one does not have that rule seems to confuse a few people each week.

Thanks for catching my error Reid. Rules edited.

Ah, one of these days I'll get to Mayan country.

I thought about ancient culture, but opted for contemporary instead.

Písac - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quichua vegetable seller, Písac market (between Cuzco and Machu Picchu, in Peru):

Much of the Pisac market targets tourists, but I loved its lively fresh produce section, where locals sell to other locals, and how they dress isn't a way to catch the tourists' attention.

If you can identify all those vegetables, you're a better cook than I am.

Here is my addition for this one:

The Zion Gate at Jerusalem

I do not want to pull any type of political discourse into this thread. This thread is for photos of cultures. I felt that this one place really embodies all the strife between the cultures that can be found in Jerusalem. I had wanted to crop out the tour group at the bottom of the frame but I felt that the lone flower held up by the woman in the middle belongs in this photo.

I haven't travelled enough to have any shots of other cultures "in the wild", as it were. Buit there is an active Balinese community here in Denver. Some (American) friends of mine play in a Gamelan that is directed by a Balinese musician. Here is one of the dancers:

This has to be Culture... It says so on the building! (You may sometimes wonder if I ever took a picture anywhere other than Tanzania... )

My friend, please, buy our crap... In all seriousness, some really impressive wood carvings to be had. We bought some nice stuff.
