Weekly Challenge #105 Backlighting
Posted By: NaClH2O, 07-31-2009, 06:33 PM

Taking a well exposed backlit photograph is difficult. The dynamic range us usually high, you have to at least think about flare, and colors can either get blown out or completely subdued in shadow. I always like good back lit photos, they can have a dramatic flair (pun intended) lacking from the usual front or near front lit shots. So let's see your back lit photos. Note that I am NOT looking for silhouettes. I am looking for some detail and color (or grey range if you choose to submit a B&W shot) to the subject. As a sample here is this:

Contest will close on Saturday August 8th and I will judge and post the winners on Sunday the 9th.

Cropped version of one I posted in another challenge. Still fits this category, I think.

Something a little different. That is a waterfall backlight by the platform. The trees are backlight by various lights in behind. Taken at the Wynn Hotel in Sin City, Las Veags

I think this is the only image I have that fits the challenge. It's from a recent engagement shoot. The lens flare is there on purpose. I think I need to buy a cheap filter to get even more flare.

Ice storm at sunset

I have a lot of these as well. Sorta tough to pick only one. Like Alan's shot above my favourite would be a wedding shot but I'll post something different.

This was after an ice storm this spring. I liked how the sun just turned the ice to little crystal fire.

It's one of those shots I like because I spotted the location earlier in the day and with a compass figured out where the sun would set. There were a number of neat ice formations in different spots but I knew I could only pick one place to shoot the sunset. This one seemed best and I hoped we'd have a clear evening. Came back later on and waited. The scene looked like this for maybe 2 minutes or less. I came back the next morning, the ice was off the trees/wires and the ice only lasted the one day. So it's a moment in time that can't be repeated.
