Welcome to Picture of the Week 07/26/09 - 08/9/09 #73

It's my honor to be hosting you fine folks this week. Once again same rules and really other than time frames there are no rules

1) No theme just your favorite stuff.
2) Let's keep it to about 4-6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera is fine, film, P&S, DSLR (or Samsung DSLR)
4) Date : Sunday 07/19/09 to Sunday 08/02/09. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

Seeing as how I didn't miss the cutoff for this week, I'll pop a third lightning pic from the series I took during that storm we had last week before it's too late!

Enjoy!

It rained most of the weekend, what else is new? I did get the kayak out for a paddle on Saturday, the afternoon got nice but my normally quiet stream became a challenge and the camera stayed in it dry bag most of the trip. The first shot is normally a carry for about a hundred feet, mostly sand with only a few inches of water but not this week. The Herons were nowhere to be seen. I did manage to get a bee mooning me as I cruised by attempting to get my contribution to the boring flowers collection.

Rense - those are indeed sharp for hand held well done.

OldSchool - ummm Crab one of my favorites - great shot.

Jeff - another nice lightening capture.

Reeftool - Despite the rain you have a couple of nice captures.

Here is my Fisheye vantage point of the Football game.

I went out at lunch today to try out my new DA 55-300mm. I've had it for about 2 weeks now, but haven't put it to much use yet. After today's walkabout, I know the DA 55-300mm will be getting a lot more use.

Frank - nice shots and congrats on the news lens. That is indeed a great low cost alternative for good light and a very good performer as you have shown.

Javin - Nice silhouette - looks like a good hair day

eccs19 - good series I like #1 nice perspective, the mushroom could use a little more DOF I think.

County Fair Time!

Here's my kids' entries for this year's Salt Lake County fair:

From Abigail, 4 years old. No post-processing, just some cropping.

1) Botanical

2) Pets

3) Fair theme: "Pick of the crop"

From Amelia, Age 8. # 1 & 3 are straight out of the camera. #2 was cropped.

1) Botanical

2) Macro

3) Scenic - without hand of man

The fair starts tomorrow. I think we're going Friday or Saturday.

I'll post my and my wife's entries later. I started a thread about my choices here, asking for opinions, but nobody seems interested.

Good luck on your fair entries! I submitted several pictures last year at our local fair and was pleasantly surprised at how well they did.

Don't be too dismayed regarding your other post. I posted my last-year's entries in "Post Your Photos" and got no response Subsequent postings of the same images on other threads generated positive comments...go figure.

Gus, nice to see you here

Great shots of that Mantis (???), the second one is very funny! Did you hide for him (her) or he (she) for you??

Oldschool - nice crab shots, I've never eaten them, but they look great!
Jeff - that lightning is phantastic....I love the colours in the sky, it's surreal!
Reeftool - boring flowers? Flowers are never boring! Nice shots, looks like you had a great time!
Dave - great shots all over. I like the female duck especially, 'cause I tried to shoot some myself yesterday, and did not succeed....
Eccs - fine series, I love the last one of the mushroom!
Scott (and family ) - wow, those are great! Those sunflowers against the blue sky is definately a winner...

Some of my catches of today, at the Infantery Shooting Range where I worked today.

#1: a moth (Calamia tridens)

#2: the same one

#3: a grasshopper (Myrmeleotettix maculatus)

#4: another one of the same species...

#5: a boring butterfly (with a bullet in the foreground...; the species is Hipparchia semele)

#6: and a mushroom (it's defenitately a Hygrocybe, but I am not sure on the species....)

I hope you like them....

This place is too nice. Not enough blowhards to tell us what they really think.

Anyway, here's the rest of our entries:

My wife:

1) Architecture. This needed cropping - it was taken through the windshield of a moving car.

2) Fair theme: "Pick of the crop": Had to lighten this a bit.

3) Humor: just some cropping.

And, finally, my entries:

1) Commercial and Industrial:

2) Portraiture - children:

3) Wildlife in the wild:
