PROJECT 52-2-07 Colors: Black & White
Posted By: mithrandir, 08-12-2009, 09:52 PM

Our Assignment for Week 7 looks at colors, or more correctly the absorption of all colors and the reflection of all colors, in other words black and white. Grays, as in grayscale, is also acceptable.
(Pictures for week 7 competition to be taken and posted between 20090816 and 20090823).

NOTE: We have two Seasonal competitions planned for the last two weeks of year two. You may take pictures for these anytime between 20090705 and the posting dates of 20100704 or 20100711. This way you can include your favorite holiday or season whenever it occurs during the year.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-2 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
6. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
7. Any picture taken from 20090705 to listed closing date is acceptable for the
two “Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-2-51 & 52.

Is it Black on White or White on Black?

Okay, I'll get this thread going with my entry courtesy of the Maryland Zoo at Baltimore.

Dave,
That was my question as well...are we talking about B&W photography or subjects that are intrinsically B&W in one way or another?

Rob, your thoughts? My angle was to shoot the actual colors black and white, but that black and white conversions also fit the theme. Rob you have confused us all by doing both!!!

My thought was either/or. You can shoot a black and white scene or convert it in post processing or both. The final shot posted must be black, white, or grayscale.

Ok...here goes...

Front of Veteran's Administration Hospital, Portland, Oregon

KMZ Helios 44M 58/2

This is a B&W conversion from the K10D raw output with a yellow "filter" applied in PP.

Steve

(Tempted to correct the "keystone"...but decided to leave as is...)

(Also tempted to tweak the curves a little more in PP...)

Here's one from my shots this week. I posted it elsewhere, but like the B&W conversion better.

I'm having some issues with GIMP plugins and didn't get to try all the PP I would have liked. I wanted to contribute though, so here goes.

cheers
