PROJECT 52-2-09 Depth of Field: Deep
Posted By: mithrandir, 08-26-2009, 03:05 PM

Our Assignment for Week 9 looks at using Depth of Field (DOF) as an artistic component of a photograph. For this week we will be looking at deep DOF (everything is in focus from foreground to background).

(Pictures for week 9 competition to be taken and posted between 20090830 and 20090906).

NOTE: We have two Seasonal competitions planned for the last two weeks of year two. You may take pictures for these anytime between 20090705 and the posting dates of 20100704 or 20100711. This way you can include your favorite holiday or season whenever it occurs during the year.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-2 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
6. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
7. Any picture taken from 20090705 to listed closing date is acceptable for the
two “Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-2-51 & 52.

The is going to be FISH EYE week! I just wish that I had sent some film off yesterday get the results back in time. The Zenitar is nice on the K10D, but is awesome on film.

Now...to find some compelling subjects!

Fish Eye or not, the challenge for this week is finding the appropriate subject. The big DOF needs to tell a visual story and lead the eye...hard to do...

At a little league baseball field near my office. shot this morning. I'll call it 'yellow brick road' since the fence guard almost looks like a road leading to the trees...

This One Stands Out

At the post cemetery for the Ft. Vancouver Barracks there are markers and graves for many of the men that served there. Most of the stones are the same size as supplied by the government though a few are different. This one stood taller than the rest and the inscription tells a story.

The stone is badly eroded but the full inscription reads:

Sergeant
Michael Garroll
A Native of Tipperary, Ireland
Company K 21st INFT.
Died at Vancouver BKS. W.T.
Apr. 6, 1880
Aged
38 Years
May He Rest In Peace
Erected in his memory by the men of his company

His men and fellow soldiers were not content that he should have an ordinary marker.

Steve

Yep I'll play too. Made today, at the Hemmen Estate with my quite recently aquired RMC Tokina 17mm f/3.5. I am not totally happy with this one, because the cow is looking away, but in this one at least the sky is not totally blown out.

I stopped last night on the way home to shoot an exceptionally red / orange sunset was about to leave when I turned around and saw this as a good example of deep DOF.

My entry is a bit different. It's along the same idea as deep DOF, but it is more in the way of "flattened" DOF. But I really like the shot so I'm submitting it. It's a shot straight up thru a domed...gazebo...I'd guess you'd call it in the center of the formal rose garden at the NY Botanical Gardens. To give you an idea of what you are looking at I included a second "normal" shot of the same structure. Taken with the Zenitar 16mm FE and the K20D. Obviously the second shot is not for judging but only for "orientation"
