PROJECT 52-2-17 Landscape: Your Back Yard
Posted By: mithrandir, 10-21-2009, 09:27 PM

Our Assignment for Week 17 continues the genre of Landscapes. This week we are looking quite literally at our own backyard. (If you live in a place without a backyard, feel free to use a relative's or friend's back yard or a common area). Let's see what great landscape pictures we can envision is this rather domestic setting.

(Pictures for week 17 competition to be taken and posted between 20091025 AND 20091108).

NOTE: We have two Seasonal competitions planned for the last two weeks of year two. You may take pictures for these anytime between 20090705 and the posting dates of 20100704 or 20100711. This way you can include your favorite holiday or season whenever it occurs during the year.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-2 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
6. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
7. Any picture taken from 20090705 to listed closing date is acceptable for the
two “Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-2-51 & 52.

Well my backyard is just desolate...
We had our first decent rain for as long as I can remember last night and the only thing that sprouted out there was this wild flower of unknown origin:

I'm quite disadvantaged for this challenge...

Wish my yard looked that good Bruce. I just got into flowers this year and only have a few planted so far. Yours is excellent.

Only one, but what an only one, Ash. Great shot!

Here's my backyard. I actually like the light on the orange flower.

This week's challenge is a hard one! (Seems I say that a lot.)

My backyard is on the downward slide from autumn into winter and is pretty much a soggy mess. It doesn't help any either that I have little of interest back there to start with. Then there is the matter of "landscape". When I see that word, I think context and depth.
What to do? What to do?
Oh, well...the rain slacked a little about an hour ago and the light improved as well. Here is my much-photographed pot of strawberry plants. With any luck the fisheye and a little judicious PP will add the element of depth:

Steve, I had the same thoughts as you had ! So I took my Tokina 17/3.5 and made a shot close to the ground. This is the result.

Maybe a small pond/lake in the foreground?

If the ground had not been so wet, I would have done something very close to your shot!

(Oh dear...I just had a wildly creative idea...too bad I have already submitted for this week... )

Thanks Photolady, I assure you, takes a lot of looking after. But I like it, and really, most ofthe year, our climate here is ideal, no snow or frost, range from about 7degC to about 40 degC.

Here is another for your interest, and incentive

DO NOT JUDGE THIS PHOTOGRAPH

One day I'll show you my backyard. It's pretty big but has lots of trees on it. Some oaks that have been here for over 60 years and rather large. We also have orange and grapefruit trees, plus a few other fruit trees.

I hope to get my own flower garden built up next year.

Those of yours are lovely. Love the intermingling of the different colors you have there.

Great shots everyone! Keep them coming.
Here is my entry for this weeks theme. I live in a city setting, cookie cutter row homes, multiple street lights, ect... I don't really have a back yard, but here is a photo
of the alley behind my house. I tweaked the saturation a bit in PP to highlight the "perks" of living in the city. Sometimes I feel like I am the only home owner who cleans up his area!

Enjoy.

Original Poster
Arboreal Sea

As I watched, the flotsam and jetsam of the Arboreal Sea swelled into the backyard.

Before I got to the inevitable raking, I wanted to capture the sea like metaphor of the tree leaves of fall.
