Picture of the week #86 Oct 25 - Nov 8 2009
Posted By: davef, 11-01-2009, 06:59 AM

So it's time to see your stuff from last week and this upcoming week.

Thanks Peter for the POTW. Nice stuff last week posted here https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/mini-challenges-games-photo-stories/77663...-1-2009-a.html

Again same rules and really other than time frames there are no rules

1) No theme just your favorite stuff.
2) Let's keep it to about 4-6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera is fine, film, P&S, DSLR (or Samsung DSLR)
4) Date : Sunday 10/25/2009 to Sunday - Sunday 11/08/2009. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

Previous hosts: (each one is a hotlink to that POTW thread to look past at the previous 83 weeks. Peter started the links, I know it had to be a lot of editing!!

Carl, great job with the fizzy water. Particularly like the first 2. How do you light them?
I use a bendy necked LED lamp, usually postioned just behind the lens pointing at the subject, ghetto macro lighting! The DVD shots you have to vary the lighting postion to get the best refraction on the DVD surface, it's all trial and error but thats the fun of it all.

Few more from Sin City

I use to work for a power company and was heavily involved in the reconciliation of comsumption and distrubition of KWh (Kilowatt hours), as such I am always amazed at what the Hotels must pay for a power bill on a monthly baisis - then again they 'pass' on the costs to all the gamblers ahaha.

These are not the best shots. I found this time in Vegas I did not take many shots. Perhpas having been there so oftern , or the mood did not suit me this time not sure. Anyway here are a few

Home Base - we always stay a Bally's resonably priced , middle of the strip more or less. We may change to downtown next time,

The Belagio water show - runs evey 45 minutes I think ? Always impressive I think they put some new jets in this year.

The Flamingo where the stars of yesteryear bring back their days of glory .

Eiffle Tower always have at least one shot of this - 1/4 scale pretty impressive

Not a good shot at all (technically) - but it does give an idea of how bright Vegas is from the air

Love the "Flamingo" shot, it really appeals to me but I can't put my finger on the reason why!

Here are a couple of shots done with the Helios 44M (cross-posted in the Soviet Lens Club, but what the hey...)

Barclay Pear

K10D, KMZ Helios 44M 58/2

Peony Leaves

K10D, KMZ Helios 44M 58/2

Steve

(Yeh, Yeh...I got skunked on my last photo outing and had to reuse these...50+ exposures and no keepers...)

Ok...maybe these two from yesterday are not too bad...

Berries for the Birds

K10D, Pentax-K 55/1.8

Red beyond Red

K10D, Pentax-K 55/1.8

Steve

(I tried and tried to show more detail in the red leaf. Bracketing, contrast changes in PP...nothing worked. It is not quite blocked up, but perilously close...)

Steve,

Love the colors in the Barclay Pear shot and the bokeh from the K 55 1.8 in the last shot.

A beaver felled a tree in the green space next to our parking lot at work; this is in the middle of the city... (DA 70mm). Shooting horizontal yellow fall foliage is quite the task and nothing beats standing under a Japanese red maple in the late afternoon (FA* 85mm)

Carl, thanks for the lighting info. I'll have to play around with that when I get a chance.

Jeremy, thanks for dropping by. I like the jelly bean and the bokeh on your fiance's picture is quite interesting. I particularly like the 1st of the bubble shots.

John, the colours on some of these birds are very interesting. We only see that in pet stores and zoos!

Dave, the night photos turned out great. The one from the air does really underline just how much electricity does get consumed there.

Ditto for the night shot of the jack-o-lanterns Scott. The one on the end with the hands is quite the creation!

AOski, good to see you back. Halloween seems to be a recurring theme this week.

Steve, like the Barclay Pear and I do like the way "Red beyond Red" turned out when I block everything out an view it as an abstraction.

Jeff, I'm amazed that your town has its own beaver. The red canopy is an interesting effect.

The quality and variety continues to amaze me. I guess that's why POTW carries on after all these weeks. Dave

Thanks! I was so lucky with the pear leaves. The weather had been very damp with a thick overcast. The clouds started to thin out a bit and I was able to take advantage of having a little more light at the red end of the spectrum.

As for the K 55/1.8...It is a stellar lens in almost every way. Pity they did not throw in a few more iris blades to make the very nice bokeh even better!

My son Kevin modeling for

My son Kevin has modeled for the occasional shot here and there. He seemed to enjoy it so this time it was to be part of the reason we went to this location-Art St nearby to DongHai University in Taichung. It is a very bohemian area and offers some great backgrounds and good people watching too.
