PROJECT 52-2-19 Lighting: Light Painting (Use flashlights)
Posted By: mithrandir, 11-11-2009, 07:20 PM

For week 19, we will have a bit of fun with light painting. Just your camera, your flashlight(s) and your imagination. Here are a few links to get the juices flowing.

Painting with light :: Photocritic photography blog

Turning exposures into art

Light painting and photography

(Pictures for the week 19 competition are to be taken and posted between 20091115 AND 20091122).

NOTE: We have two Seasonal competitions planned for the last two weeks of year two. You may take pictures for these anytime between 20090705 and the posting dates of 20100704 or 20100711. This way you can include your favorite holiday or season whenever it occurs during the year.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-2 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
6. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
7. Any picture taken from 20090705 to listed closing date is acceptable for the
two “Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-2-51 & 52.

OK, here's my entry to get things started... running shoes lit by a bare bulb to 'electrify' it.
Motivated by the need for me to improve my fitness in preparation for boot camp...

I would say this project is off to a running start.

Happiness Is....

Take a wild guess what I used to capture this pic.

Anywho, taken as a multi-exposure in Tv mode set at 30" and ISO 100. Had to do it this way since I don't have a remote yet. Anyone want to send me one to make it easier???? Post processing included cropping and a little cloning to get rid of some reflections that built up over time (shot was taken in a hallway).

I may try it again tonight in the basement where I can avoid wall reflections and have a bigger "canvas" to work on. Can I re-submit if I get a version I like better?

Here is my go at the light painting. I decided to try the alternate effect, i.e., I used a LED light with diffuser to illuminate the subject in the dark. It was harder than I thought to keep the highlights and shadows in balance. I present "Night Soul:"

Don't I know it. When I picked the subjects it was to force me (and everyone) out of our comfort zone. By the way, you have always come up to the challenge very well.

Well, I can see that I should have looked at the articles before I played around with my flashlight.

Anyway, hope all who take the project where it can go also have fun in the process.

Here is my entry for this weeks challenge.
I ran out of time and resources, so my wife decided to help me out with my light painting idea.

The theme this week definitely pushed me to try new photo techniques,
which is not a bad thing. Mithrandir thanks once again for a great theme.

Corey.
