PROJECT 52-2-22 Lighting: Sidelighting
Posted By: mithrandir, 12-04-2009, 06:47 PM

For Week 22 we return to Light (not dark). This time we move the source to the side of the subject.

"Side lighting can have a very drastic effect on your photos, also. But, unlike backlighting, its brightness comes from the right or left of your subject. This tends to cast one side in total darkness, while putting the other in the spot light. This is a wonderful way to get a mysterious, dramatic portrait photo. Pose your subject in front of a window, with one of their shoulders close to the window. Your camera will expose properly for the bright side and will usually cast the other side of the face in complete darkness. If, on the other hand, you want a natural portrait you can use something to reflect light onto the darkened side of the face. A white poster board or other light reflecting surface can bounce enough light back onto your subject to soften the effect of side lighting.

Side lighting is wonderful for showing texture and adding depth to a photo."

(Pictures for the week 22 competition are to be taken and posted between 20091206 AND 20091213).

NOTE: We have two Seasonal competitions planned for the last two weeks of year two. You may take pictures for these anytime between 20090705 and the posting dates of 20100704 or 20100711. This way you can include your favorite holiday or season whenever it occurs during the year.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-2 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
6. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
7. Any picture taken from 20090705 to listed closing date is acceptable for the
two “Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-2-51 & 52.

Right, it's out with the flash and an attempt to emulate Dan's great shot! That's a super baby image.

My attempt of static non vomiting type subject (the bales that is):

My boy-my favourite model and sometimes he is surprisingly very helpful. I have a series of portraits of him in "sidelighted" environment-I choose this one for this project:

Rense and Ash,
That is hardly the way to encourage us to post our measly attempts!
I had the same feeling seeing the pictures of Rense and Ash,
on the other hand if you never try, you will never learn...

So I grabbed a candle-holder, a lamp and my camera en took this shot:

I know this is too late for the challenge, but I just got home with it tonight. Just an unposed shot of my daughter lit by a lamp to her left and a TV in front of her.
